Saw this in the newspaper and got it yesterday. It's $90 - 2 $30 rebates. $30 + tax for an 80 gig drive is decent for a rig that's not doing tons of music and video..
BTW, there was 2 versions of the drive when I got to BBUY, 1 was made in Thailand and 1 was made in Malaysia. You'd want to get the made in Thailand one if you can since the power draw, and probably the heat output by extension, is half of that of the Malaysia made one. (Unless you guys know that the made in Malaysia one is more reliable, in which case I need to go exchange my drive, lol) This is one case where shopping at a store beats shopping online, heh.

I had no idea there was a heat difference depending on where it was manufactured. Thanks for the info!
I didnt know about the heat\power difference either./
Are you sure they are that cheap? I'll go there tomorrow if they really are. Can you link me or something? I'm going to look now, in the meantime.

yea, but the BF ones were maxtors IIRC... Also, yes, there was a definite power difference, I think the Malaysia ones were .75A on the 12V rail, where the Thailand ones were something like .35A (don't have the drive near me now, can't tell for sure..) Also, the deal is online too, but then you don't get to choose on which drive you get, which I guess for $30 you might not care... I just want my drives to run cooler, and therefore last longer... Hope that helped..

are the different specs listed on the drive? how can you tell the difference?

yep, just look thru the packaging to the label on the drive, drive power draw and country of origin's listed right on there.

EDIT: Now that I've looked at my drive, the made in Thailand one's power draw are .35/.5A on the 5/12V rails, so max power used is about 8W, the Malaysia one I believe was something like .5/.75A, which meant the max power used is about 12W... That could make a difference to someone whose PSU is barely hanging on to the heavy load, not to mention heat is probably gonna be less of an issue with the lower powered drive.
You get one instant rebate and one MIB?

Would you like a cookie? Black Friday was several months ago, those weren't 80 GB Western Digital SE's and even if they were, posting this is pretty irrelevant.
Correct sence we will have to wait about 8 more months to get another black friday./

it's an ok deal, it's hard to find small drive now aday, and some people will only need as much as 40GB to tell the truth (gamers, they don't need HDD space, they need speed). I personally bought a 160GB seagate for 110-40rebate = 70, so this is better but the draw back is the rebate. BTW my drive is 5 year waranty, it's deffintely draw less power, it's SATA :).
This is a good deal, but think about it... don't you get charged tax on $89.99 instead of $29.99? That would end up costing almost $100, minus a $60 rebate (which takes so long)... so basically $40. Hell, they're only like $10 more regularly and you won't have to wait for a rebate.
It's a good deal, but to save $10 for waiting for a rebate? Plus, most of us that see deals jump on the item EVEN THOUGH WE DON'T NEED IT. I jump on deals all the time when I don't need it, just to hold onto it for being cheap.
So if I get taxed no $89.99 instead of $29.99, it really isn't that big of a deal for me.

there's a good analysis on the deal :), BTW what does everyone think about a 500watt X connect for 70 no rebate? i'm tempting to grab one but not sure if it's a good deal.

Where can I find a 80 gig WD SE drive for $50?? I looked on Newegg.. They wanted something like $65.. If you can find me an 80 gig WD or Seagate HD for $50, I would return the drive that I got to the store, since $50 w/o a rebate IS a pretty good deal for a new drive..
Tax wasn't that bad for me, it was like $6, so $36 for a good drive AR, IMO that's still a great deal.. I also happened to need a HDD for a new rig that I'm building, so this came at the right time for me..
Also, the 2 mail in rebates go to pretty reliable rebate house, none of the New Rochelle, NY stuff (those that shop at CUSA know what I'm talking about..)
Finally, to save $10 waiting on a rebate that's gonna take like 2 months to come back isn't TOO bad, since that's like a 20% saving in this case.. That's all I have to say for now.

It's not uncommon to see hard drives going cheap nowdays, especially after rebates. It wasn't irrelevant.

the seagate i mention is at outpost or fry, just hang on and it'll come back, they put that deal on once every week for the past few months now. your deal wasn't that great, but you don't have to return it :), just keep it, as long as you're happy with it, i don't see why you have to return it. There are HDD deals floating everywhere because the HDD bite the dust more often than any other part of a computer. lol, so just chill out and wait for a killer deal, all my HDD are as follow:
60GB maxtor 25AR
120GB maxtor (ugg i over paid for this one, 100, but that was 3 years ago lol)
160GB maxtor 70 no rebate
250GB maxtor 99 no rebate
160GB seagate 70AR
160GB seagate 70AR both seagates are SATA, and i'm waiting for the 2nd rebate, the 1st one came through.
so yeah, if you really need HDD like now, just head over to amazon, there's people saling the 160GB WD for 70 shipped (or around there) no tax, just the UPC got cut off, the drive is still brand new in static bag with 3 year waranty, those people are PM master who PM CC to get the drive for like 20, so they are making about 50 off the drive.
