I need to send some 133mb of photos over the internet, so I tried msm messenger and that was too slow, the I tried to use a file sharing application and the other person couldnt' find the file. I got cable so I wanted to know how can I send this file to my friend faster.

Best way to do it IMO is to use FTP. One of you downloads Filezilla Server (http://filezilla.sourceforge.net), and the other downloads Filezilla (client). Installation for both is very easy, and the worst part will probably be opening up port 21 on the router that is hosting the server.

FTP has no file transfer size limit and is very reliable, so it's ideal for transferring large files.

Another option is to set up IIS on one machine and have the other person download it through HTTP, but I don't think this would be as good a solution as using FTP.

Yea, FTP is definetly the way to go on transfering large files. My friends and I do it all the time.

another option if you can't get ftp to work,,,,,,,,
zip the files in smaller chunks and send them thru IM,,,,,,,,,,,

that would take just as long but with more work, I could split them in 10mb parts and use gmail to send them and that would be easier, but I want to try this ftp thing, it looks useful.

Don't forget that you are limited by your upload bandwidth. While your download speed may be insanely fast at say 4 Mbps, your upload may be a paultry 384 kbps. In any case, people will not be able to download from you any faster than the upload speed that you have to offer.

I know, but I'm pretty sure it can do better then 11kbps.

I usually just do file -> send, i've done it with files gb's in size never really had a problem. Just as fast as FTP, can resume, etc.

For some reason it didn't work for me, could be the firewall+router slowing it down, by the other person also has a cable connection, some as mine with unlimited downstream bandwidth.

FTP is the way to go. Very easy to set up with Filezilla.

If it's just a one time thing, then use YouSendIt.com

You just type in your e-mail and upload the file and it'll give you a link to dl it. It has a limit though. 25 clicks / transfer I believe and the link will expire in 7 days. So if it's private then you should only have to worry about the 7 days thing.

Another alternate I can think of is using WinRar and splitting the files into 10mb files and perhaps using Gmail attachments.

probably be faster to burn them to a cd and send them via snail mail. lol

usenet is a good option

My ISP gives me 500M+ of free space, so I just upload to that with my FTP client, and e-mail my bud the link to download at his leasure...that way we have a backup copy on hand, and we can each work at our best speed.
Also, I'm the only one that needs the FTP software as they can connect and download with any browser/OS.

Glad you got 'er done, but ask your ISP about free space...I had my ISP for about 4 years before I found out about it while wandering through their homepage.
