Is it a conflict? Or just overload?

I just bought 2x512MB of DDR400 Vdata ram, to stick in next to my previous 2x256MB of Geil DDR400, on a P4G8X (dual channel board, yes).
Anyway, it just kept freezing on Memtest's Test 5. I loosened my timings (set them at SPD), but it just happened: the Geil alone worked fine, the Vdata alone did as well, but to keep them both together I have to lower my FSB from 170 to 165 (or lower - I'm still testing for stability). Note: both rams are rated DDR400, vdimm is 2,7 (max) and vagp 1,7 (max).
Is this a board limitation?
