View Full Version : is there even a 1% chance of hurting my 6800 256mb nu card by vm and unlocking pipes?
 if i voltmod my 6800 256 mb nu from 1.3-1.4 will it have any chance of hurting my card.....and will unlocking the pipes have any chance of hurting my card?

Yes, you alwasy have a chance of hurting your card if you run it out of stock specificaitons.
Only way to find out is try - it is a risk you have to accept to do this type of thing and also accept the responsibility that if you fry your card, you do not RMA it but suck up youor loss and get a new one.

I don't think i have seen anyone ruin there 6800nu from unlocking the pipes or upping the voltage to 1.4. But there is always that 'chance' it could, but i highly doubt it. I agree with Mr.Guvernment though about the RMA advice. If i ever screw something up running it out of manufactor specs i just suck it up.

i unlocked a 6800 128mb and it would just BSOD when running 3d apps. just changed rivatuner back and it's fine... i also vmod 6800's through bios all the time... you could bad flash it though
Listen closely, I have fried one mobo, two vid cards and one very nice 1Ghz tbird that would break 1.6Ghz (fast in the day), along with one stick of ram. I don't do this much anymore however if you can not afford (or live with) frying a component then you should seriously reconsider what you are doing. One only finds out how far something can be pushed by well.....Then there is the terrible habit of humans wanting more or better stated "if a little is good then a lot is better". If you can't afford to replace it then at least think about it ahead of time. Grown men crying is just heartbreaking.
im 13 and i just bought my video card and the rest im getting soon....all but the hard drive and the cpu i gotta pay for......i got some help but i cant afford to fry it..........
In that case i would leave it 100% stock, if you did fry it, you would probably cry :)

LOL...a very nice piece of hardware for a 13 year old. I think Atari was the sexiest thing I could wish for at that age! :bang head

Unlocking pipes if done through rivatuner should be 100% safe. If there are problems close the pipes back off ASAP and you should have no ill effects. VM is a diff story. If you're worried about frying it do not try to volt mod it.

i haven't seen many 6800 nu that will overclock all the pipes. i have three and none of the three will unlock all pipes.

there's always a risk when modding a card, specially if its a physical mod, if you want to play it safe, use a soft mod instead of the physical ones....

i had one my old bfg 6800nu it oc's to 400mhz core and 800mhz mem all pipes and shaders unlocked, I scratched the PCB when i was installing a water cooling block... so its there are cards there that can. A lot of the ones that i saw came from BFG..

On software mods, it is difficult if not impossible to detect, but if you use a physical mod then trust me unless its on the paper that the company would cover it, your out of luck....
I had a mishap with my 9800 Pro, bought it for $250, It would artifact like mad. Gave it an alchohol bath, didnt work, so i used my 5200 till i got my 6800. Never should have tried to epoxy that humongous sink onto it /rant.
Anyway if you can't afford the lose dont go overboard. Unlocking pipes has VERY little risk, if it doesnt work, revert back. VM'ing is a dif story, you should be happy enough with your OC without VM'ing.
id say do it cuz its not that risky.
