Ok, I am like way confused. Recently programs that run in the background ie; Outlook checking for mail, Nod32 auto updating, Mailwasher Pro etc. have stopped logging on the web when windows goes to screensaver. I am using standard MS screen savers. Have I missed a setting somewhere?

One last try... I am still having problems with programs doing auto updates when the screen savers kicks in. Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this. I have googled and searched and found nothing.
Have you tried changing to a different screensaver (perhaps even a non MS one should they be causing issues)?

Yup sure have. The only time my programs will work is when I shut off the screen saver and just turn off the monitor. It's weird. No auto updates work, mail won't be checked. anything that has to do with an online connection. I am running Broadband on 24/7.
check your firewall settings some will not allow net accesses when the screen saver is running.

jrbob made a good point...if you happen to be running ZA, check under ZoneAlarm Program control | Automatic Lock | Custom Lock settings | Lock mode. You should see settings similar to "Lock when screensaver activates", and "When Lock Engages-->Allow Pass-Lock Programs To Access The Internet" (it's been awhile since I used ZA, but I believe those are the settings you need to be concerned with.)
I believe you'll also need to enable pass lock for each individual program you want to have access while locked. Go to the Programs tab of the Program Control page in the ZA Control Center. Here you'll find all your programs listed that need internet access, and columns of settings...the last column is headed by a padlock. Click on this box in the row of settings for the programs you want to have access, and insert a key by choosing Pass Lock.
