My Pentium-M based Dell 00m burns DVDs just fine. I tried making a backup copy of my Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon DVD last night, and I was able to browse the web and all while it decoded the DVD and then reencoded it on to my hard drive. I even paused it for the night and hibernated the computer, turned it on this morning and it picked up where it left off :)
If I were you, I'd look into an Inspiron 6000 with dedicated graphics.
One take a look at Asus laptops they are great. I got myself a M6BNe with DVD+/-RW.
Second take that stuff about selling your desktop out of your sig and post. Selling outside of the classifieds isn't allowed here. Just wait till 100 posts and you'll gain access. Don't spam to 100 either.

You will still need to remove the information about selling from your post, or this thread will be removed.

EDIT: That last line may still get you into trouble, im not sure. Thats up for a mod to decide. Sorry to keep mentioning things, but im just trying to keep the new members out of trouble.

Celeron processors have come a long way; I wouldn't necessarily eliminate a laptop from consideration just because it has a Celeron, especially if budget is a concern. Heck, I've even got a Dell server here with a Celeron processor running Win2k3 and SQL 2000 to feed our accounting department (I didn't purchase it, so I take no responsibility :)).

i'm unsure why so few choose this route, but to me build-your own laptop is a nice alternative. you won't have an overall warranty, but you will have warranties from the companies you bought the different parts from, and many are excellent. you can avoid buying overpriced included items. i'm considering getting a aopen barebook from coboc.com. the asus offerrings there look very excellent as well. you need to add cpu, ram and hard drive. so i'll add celeron M ($100) or pentium M ($250), 1gb ram ($100ish), and a 5400rpm 80gb hdd ($100ish), for total cost of $700 at the least, most likely around $800. i think it's a very good option. the QC on barebooks tends to be very high and you are intimately involved in your pc, knowing how it works etc.
^^^^ I don't understand how $750 off dell cupons can be considered overpriced... a new cupon is released like every 2 weeks from dell...
Dell uses it as a sort of word of mouth advertizing... those that know about the cupons get a sweet deal and show off their new UBER 9300 and other people that like the sweet rig suddenly want one of their own but when they go to the dell site the price is really high cause they don't know about the cupons...
I got 42% off plus a $100 mail in rebate when I bought my laptop... and it's got a 4 year (small buisness) ACCADENTIAL DAMAGE warranty... I could accadentally dump a 128oz super big gulp on my laptop and dell will come straight out to my house and fix it for me...
Stay in the know and save alot of dough ;)
wow that was corny...

Yes, yes it was.
:bang head
But I agree that Dell's doing well at building a fan base. Frankly, their prices and product warrant it.

some links to where these coupons for 750$ off are. i will get a dell if i can find a computer i would like for 800$. also about when do the coupons come out? and can you customizr the notebook while using a coupon
i considered buildning a laptop, but thats about the same price as to buy a nice dell... not sure which route to go yet.
all with experience on buildning a laptop???? i build desktops all the time
i looked on copoc.com and will either get an asus barebone or aopen...aopen seems like they are a fast growing company?

Currently there are deals that will get you a Dell laptop to $800 with a $750 coupon. The current $750 coupon is for the highest end Inspiron notebooks (like the 9300).

If you're getting a laptop now, I'd recommend looking for one that uses Intel's new Sonoma (did I get that right?) platform. 533 FSB, 400-533 DDR2. The cost differential isn't much, though when I was looking for them a month ago in Hong Kong, they weren't exactly common, so you might not find one that meets with your approval.
the inspirion 6000 seems nice for a basic laptop... theyre very cheap (even without the cupon codes) and still manage quite nicelly...
And Dell laptops for the most part have alot of customizability especially the higher end models...

if you want something small check out the dell 700m with a big discount ($750 off or better) or a dell i6000 if you want a 15"
