could some one spout out some good 80mm and 60mm fans. also I bought a sk-6 and I got a delta 60 mm fan with 38 CFM. Is this fan any good? as you can tell I don't know much about fans. Last question is thermal paste anygood? IF so what kind should I buy. also what dose lapped mean?

thanks

Lapping is basically making the bottom of your hsf perfectly flat so that you have a very good mating surface for the two.

Somebody with an sk-6 will, I'm sure, pop in to let you know if it needs to be lapped at all. :)

Well maybe I can help shed some light!:)

Fans are rated by their CFM, that 60mm you mentioned on yer SK-6 is a standard high-speed fan for heat sinks. A really good standard. Pretty noisey tho. As for other fans, the quality varies- I use all Radio Shack fans but then again I got em really cheap as I used to work there. Panaflo fans usually get high marks also.

Lapping means to sand the base of your heat sink (HSF) to make it as smooth and as flat as possible. You can sand it down toi a mirror finish with super hi-grit sandpaper and polish, but I only use 220 then 400 then 600 grit paper and it works fine for me. Make absolutely sure your sanding surface is totally flat before you try this! Like a piece of glass or marble or some such is a good bas to sand on. Doing this makes the HSF mate to the CPU core much better, improving heat transfer. It may not be needed as many new HSFs are machined quite flat already. It can't hurt tho! IF you can feel irregularities on yer HSF's bottom when you run a fingernail across it, then it ain't flat and should probably be lapped.

Thermal paste-also called heat sink grease, thermal goo, heat goo, etc,- fills tiny nooks and crannies between your CPU core and your HSF. It forms a much better seal between them than without, and improves heat transfer tremendously. If you don't use ANY you may cook your CPU, i.e always use some type of thermal paste, or else! Good brands include Artic Sliver and Nanotherm, however I use the Radio Shack heat sink grease as it is almost as good and costs less than 1/4 as much as the brand names. But I'm all about ghetto style!:D

Hope I answered your questions! As you can see I love to type:) so if you want more info feel free to ask or PM!

A good fan for the sk6 is the ys-tech's 60mm 40 cfm fan.

Arctic silver 2 is also a good paste, I just got some a few days ago. :)

so I need to use thermal grease even on an amd 500? I have it running right now with out any. The heat sink feels pretty cool.

thermal compound is always a good idea... even on a 486 it is! a cool heatsink is actualyl not necessarily good, as heat may not be being transferred from the CPU to the heatsink

the best fan is probably the delta which is noisy but it works lap your heatsink to a mirror finnish and use arctic silver thermal paste for best results.
