View Full Version : Asus Mobos and proper CPU temp
I have an Asus A7v with a T-bird 900. I have heard that the Asus motherboards report the CPU temperature higher than it actually is. My question is how much higher? I am having a serious overheating problems with it, but since the mobo reports CPU temps too high, i'm not sure what idle/max temps I should shoot for. Previously, I was getting about 67c idle and 73c max CPU, and about 42c mobo. Now, after cleaning out dust from the system, using arctic silver, and stepping down the CPU to 810mhz, i'm getting about 58c idle and 62c max, and 36c mobo. If those were true temperatures, I should have fried my CPU. Thanks for any help.

Well, you're not going to be getting terribly accurate results with any motherboard type of monitor, and the ASUS boards are rumored to read ~10C high. You're under the 70C barrier for safety (barely) but you should try to get your case(motherboard) temps down.

Those temps would have fried your CPU, they would only have shortend its live a bit...
What HSF are u using?
Using a generic HSF right now......just ordered a millenium glacier so that should be here to the rescue in a few days....
What would be the best way of getting accurate temperature readings from the CPU without spending any/much money? Looked all over the site for help on that subject.
Also, the only reason I care about the overheating was I was experiencing frequent lock-ups. Total freezes. I'd get them about 2-3 times a day....since I lowered the temps I've only been getting them about once every 2-3 days. Since the lockups occured only when the CPU reached high temps, i figured that was what the problem was. I am correct in assuming that it is possible for a CPU to lock up at temps >60c? I believe I read it was probable somewhere.
Also thinking of picking up a new case. Mine is about 3-4 years old, and does not allow for any decent case fan cooling. So that might help as well. Thanks for any help...

well i just installed a digital doc 5 and i put one of the sensors between the hs just touching the cpu core and my temps are 5 degrees C lower than my asus probe ,although when i turn my 120mm fan on the side of the case off my asus probe reads about 10 C higher than the digital doc
