View Full Version : BoincView CPU Time
After seeing the other thread, I was reminded of a problem I've been having with BoincView... It seems that after leaving it open for a while, it begins using up more and more CPU time, eventually to the point when SETI gets nothing  Even when I first start it up, it dosen't use less than 3% :( I've tried reducing the update interval, but it dosen't seem to help any. I'd roll back to 0.9.2 (the last version that I think didn't have this problem for me), but it can't connect to the new BOINC clients, so is totaly useless.
Does anybody else seem to be suffering from this problem?

Yes, I've seen BoincView go to 100% CPU, but I've only noticed it after I've suspended all PC's. I agree that even when it's not using 100%, it sucks a few too many cycles, but since my desktop is not one of my big producers it doesn't bother me too much. I do usually exit when I'm not actively monitoring or controlling my BOINC clients so as to not suck up all those cycles.
I just took a look at task manager. Boincview doesn't use more than 5% and more often then not it just says 0%. I only monitor two machines with it though so that might have something to do with it.

yeah JigPu, same here!! it sux up almost 100% of CPU cycle!! (I was gonna ask this too)
however, on my home network, I'm still using ver. 1.0.1 and it doesn't have any problem at all tho.....?? may be I'll try to roll it up in my other network and see if it helps the problem.....
btw, at home, I'm just using shared folder. could it be the reason it doesn't use up all the cpu cycle....?? at my other LAN, I've setted up using GUI RPT and it has 100% usage problem....??

JigPu I'm pretty much sure it's the newest ver. issue. I rolled back to ver. 1.0.1 and it's been using ave. 2-8% cpu cycle while most of the time is at 0% now over the weekend. it's running on a P4 2.0ghz machine monitoring 6 machines over LAN using GUI RPC.

How often do you have it do interval updates for each machine?
I've got mine setup for 3600seconds(1hour) for each machine and I don't see it break 2%. If I do tell it to update(F5), I see that percent shoot up pretty quickly(saw 38%) so maybe this is what your seeing. I think be default it automatically updates every 5 seconds or so.

I'm having it setted update at every 60sec. with 1.0.1 it usually is using 0-2% cpu cycle with about 8% or so occasionally. when I hit F5, it shoot up to 24% for less than a sec. that is monitoring 6 machines over LAN.
with the latest 1.0.4 when I started it, it's running fine like the 1.0.1, very little cpu usage. however, over time, like overnight, it's using 100% cpu cycle regardless the update time! I've tried to restart the bonicview and it happened same thing several time after a period of time of running. switched back to 1.0.1 and no problem at all for the last 3 days.
Hmmm... I may have to give 1.0.1 a shot again. I'm checking a few (4 on my LAN, 2 across the internet) as well, so the CPU usage jumps a bit when they all get checked. I posted a thread in the BoincView forums about the high idle CPU usage, and he says that he's tracking it down :) He probably knows about the 100% usage issue as well, though I didn't mention it since I have zero evidance of how it occurs (I'm thinking of leaving a process monitor open if it happens again to see if it's sudden, or a gradual increase in CPU time).

In my experience, the jump to 100% is quite sudden. I usually run my task manager, and it's pretty obvious when it suddenly goes to 100%.
