View Full Version : Which memory for a PIII 550 ??
A not-so-PC-savy friend wants me to buy 128 MB memory to upgrade the 64MB he has now. All I know about his PC is that it has an Intel motherboard (model unknown) and PIII 550 CPU. I know he has 64MB now but have no idea if that's one 64MB stick or 2 x 32. I know next to nothing about Intel hardware.
Would this box use standard 168 pin SDRAM? PC100 or PC133? Do PIII's need modules in pairs?
Any help would be appreciated. If I can get a solid answer today I'll order from Crucial before their free shipping runs out today.

Was it a prebuilt computer? Could always search on the Crucial site for the computer manufacturer. Anyway I'm pretty sure the chip runs on 100mhz FSB. But not like prices are so obscene that you couldn't get 133mhz RAM just to be on the safe side. Also would be good in case he ever wanted to upgrade. It's most likely simple 168pin SDRAM also. I'd just grab one stick of 128 PC133 RAM and be done with it. Doubtful his slots can't handle anything bigger then 64 and I'm sure it doesn't need to be installed in pairs or anything. But I'm a moron so I could be totally wrong about everything.
if your bud has Windows 98 or newer you may want to run a nice program called SiSoft Sandra 2001, it will bust out all the information including the FSB, mobo #, and other goodies (including maximum memory allowed). I would go with PC 133, since most memory should be "downward" compatible.
It was a custom built PC built by some other friend that I do not know. So it sounds like it is definitely 168 pin SDRAM which makes things easier. I think I'll pull the 128MB PC133 module I have in my old K62 box and take it to his house to try out before I buy. I need to be sure he has a free memory slot anyway.
