im looking for an all region dvd player to basically play both chinese formats and US formats. i got an apex player less than a year ago and it worked fine, but it broke yesterday. ive heard that apex brand players are really crappy, but they are the only cheap ones i know of that play both regions. the other dvd players that do that are usually really expensive. so i guess im looking for something more reliable than a cheap apex but costs less than the expensive ones.

Have you considered just playing it on your PC? If you want it on the TV you could always use TV out.

I think Windows XP (I dunno about other OSes) has a limit on how many times you can change the region (something like 5 times). I don't think using a computer for this type of stuff is the best choice, unless you can find a loop hole

i dont want to hook my computer up to my tv because 1. the quality isnt that good and 2. it requires me to power up my pc every time i want to watch a dvd

thanks for the site. its really helpful. do you know its those exact models that can play all region dvds or are they just modded and just exclusive to that site?

my suggestion for a "loop hole" in PC situation would be buy another cheap dvd rom, and set it to the chinese region, then you have one for US and another for china.

i looked through all the formats and the difference between regions seems to be PAL(european) and NTSC(american). will getting a dvd player that will play both these formats play all regions?

I just got the philips DVP642 and it's sweet. The reason why i picked this one over a $40 one was because it can play Divx and there's a region free hack. videohelp.com has alot of info on dvd players.

I got my philips for $66ish from amazon.

No, regions are different from the ntsc/pal. I don't think there are dvd players (save pc's) that play both. even if there are, the tv wouldn't be able to see one of the formats. Regions are the dvd itself and decide where exactly it should work. Why do you say that hooking up the comp to the tv isn't good quality? If your video card has svideo out (most made within the past few years do), it will probably be quite a it higher quality than that apex (I'm assuming you used composite video). As for booting up the computer- is there a problem with your computer on all of the time? Its actually better for the components to stay on and you can do things like run folding@home while you aren't using it.
