Will that work? I always thought you needed a video capture card, or an external unit that plugs into the usb port.

You do need a video capture card, unless you have an ATI All-in-Wonder video card, or your mobo has a build in composite video input. I'd recommend the ATI TV Wonder Pro. It's $60 or so, and the quality is great. If you want to capture HDTV, you might want to consider the HDTV Wonder. It is a lot more expensive though.

You can capture either through your TV (if it has a video output), or directly from your Direct TV box. The problem with going directly from the box is that often the display screen when capturing video is extremely small. As a result, you really can't see what you're capturing. I'm waiting on a friend to tell me if the TV Wonder Pro will capture video and play it full screen at the same time; if so, it would work fine. If none of these work, you can always run it through a VCR. For example, my vcr has RCA input in the front. I plug in the tv there, then run an RCA cable to the capture card, and a UHF cable to the tv (or vice versa). It's not a difficult process. Feel free to get ahold of me on aim if you need any more help.
