actually, my main work rig is a w/c'ed northwood 2.8 @ 3.5ghz with 1:1 memory right now. and I've been thinking/tempting to upgrade her especially after seeing all those newer 6xx hitting 4ghz on air! this rig is mostly for video encoding so dual core should helps quite a bit in performance I think (or according to those early reviews)....
therefore, my question is should I upgrade it to a 6xx cpu right now along with a new mobo or should I wait for the dual core later...??
TIA!

dual core may not help as much as you think.
I would wait for the retail intel dual core cpu's to come out, see the price and actual performance, and make your decision then.
Until then, I would just sit tight with your northwood.

LandShark: you say for video encoding, but the important thing is in what codec you encode ?
if you encode mostly in divx, then dual-core cpu is the way to go...
but if you encode in Xvid then u can go with 600 series cpu, because Xvid will not benefit much from dual-core cpu.
if im you, i will get 2.8ghz dual-core cpu...but thats me...

it's either divx or mostly converting video file into dvd/vcd and burn onto disc.
btw, anyone has any idea when dual core will actually hitting the street??
