well as stated in the title, i need a real cheap reciver, but that can do SOME things, and that is of some quality

i basicly want 5.1, and many inputs, and support for most of the suround formats

and my budget is about 150 bucks

I would hunt around on ebay for some Kenwood or Pioneer receivers. Try to get one with pre outs for all channels since most receivers dont have much power anyways. You'll want the option to upgrade to better amps down the road  . I would also check around on craigslist if there is one for your area. You may be able to score a decent Denon, Onkyo, or H/K receiver for that budget but it will likely not have many features or recent surround formats.

well i plan on getting some Beurotic amps from a friend down the road, and they are damn good, so i guess that should be a plus :D

mostly this will be for movies, so i dont think i will NEED that many formats, but at the same time, i am not the know all of HT either :D

i scored a sherwood rd-6108 500w 5.1 dolby/dts reciever from ciruitcity last presidents day and it works great. i was a little worried mainly because i only get top brand name stuff. i purchased it cause it was a good deal like 90 bucks after tax and rebate. i could not be more happy with it. the only thing slight problem it has is there is a tiny hum but i found its coming from lcd on front if u turn it off it goes away (same with my rio mp3 player).

u could froogle it or keep an eye out at circuitcity

hmm looked it up seems to be pretty nice, and it should do what i want it to do, play music and do movies

ok next question, i need a new TV, wanna suggest a good one? 20-27" budget is about 400

Really the biggest difference between the "higher" end brands like Denon, Onkyo or H/K and the "lower" end brands like pioneer and kenwood is the amps. In general all the cheaper receivers have tiny power supplys and relativly poor amplifiers. They tend to run out of juice sooner and they distort more. Now if you can honestly detect that distortion is another subject all together. I wouldnt try and get a reciver will a bunch of bells and whistles. Just something with a decent amount of ins and outs and pre amp outs for all channels is a BIG plus. I dont put much in all the zillions of DSP's out there. Yeah PL II is fine for stuff thats only stereo like some games etc but theres all this crap like hall and theater etc that hardly ever gets used (at least in my case). So when I'm shopping for a receiver I'm looking for a few things. Mostly what I wanna see is the analog pre outs and analog mulitchannel inputs. Adjustable Xovers for all channels is a VERY nice feature to have but not common in lower end receivers :(. And of course your standard DD and DTS plus maybe DPL II if you play a lot of games that are stereo but want surround sound. If you plan on running any HD signals definatly try and get something with component ins and outs that are HD compatible.

As for the TV I'm not sure. I would search around on HTF and see if theres any helpful info. I would seriously consider trying to get a 16:9 tv though. I think by 2006~2010 they are supposed to have the format switched to HD and 16x9?? Something like this maybe. You may be able to get a used 16:9 HDTV for around $400 though. I guess I just couldnt see spending any serious amount of money on a non HD 16:9 TV right now since the whole TV format is supposed to change.

Well if thats the case with the TV I would go with a cheaper used TV :). You should be able to get a good 27" set for under $200. I see then all the time on Craigslist out here.

If you have a craigslist for your area I would highly recommend it. I'm not saying your area wil be the same but for San Diego I see TONS of TV's all the time. For instance I just checked and found these on the first page.

Check on ecost or jandr for a refurbished Onkyo TX-SR501 or 502. They're about the best receivers you can get for less than $150. I've recommended them to many people, and they've all been extremely happy. I bought my parents one, and I use one myself. Even though they're refurbished, I haven't heard of anyone ever having any problems. Onkyo's are known to be a tiny bit bright though, so if you don't like that, you might want to try and demo one before you buy...Yamahas are also bright, although much moreso than Onkyo.
