Get ATItool or ATItraytool. They both have an automatic overclocking feature that will raise the core and mem speeds and test for artifacts for you.

I've got a 9600XT, and on stock cooling I got 590 core, 340 mem stable speeds.

I use ATITool.

It will go on indefinitely. I'd run it for a couple hours at least. overnight if possible. But honestly whatever that comes to i'd say is your baseline. You can go higher without seeing artifacts or having problems.

Well wait a sec...
After it reaches its max mem or max core, the bar starts moving down.
Just use the Find Max Core or Find Max Mem, and watch it as the bar moves up. Once the bar stops moving up after a while, and starts moving down, that means you've reached what the program considers its maximum core or memory clock. Stop the process. THEN you start moving up slowly. I do it 10MHz at a time, play a demanding game for an hour, and if no artifacts, push it 10 more MHz, etc.
