I just got this fantastic MX518 2 days ago. I love it. With my USB running at 500mhz and the MX518 @ 1600dpi the accuracy is amazing and the speed is spot on. However there is one thing that is driving me nuts on this thing.

This little hump thing:

Its in a horrible posistion, my ring finger wants to sit on it, but its terribly uncomfortable there. So its forced to be either awakardly on top of the mouse or hanging down below with the pinky.

Has anyone ever taken a file to this area to knock that down? Is there much material to work with there?

Also how about the area where the scroll wheel is? Its raised up around the wheel rather pointlessly, making the wheel hard to access. Not only that but my finger sits on this edge, and I find it annoying.

I'm hoping someone has done this before because I'm finding this so annoying I'm considering returing the mouse. Unless of course it can be modded!

Yea, but I bought this thing from amazon.com and its just a PITA to send it back.

filing down the mouse case seems like it would be a bigger PITA than mailing something back, but i guess if you've got the itch to mod...

Well I doubt the metal is all that thick (I dont know tho since I havent used that model) but what you could do is probably use alittle bondo and smooth out that metal and paint it.

bondo is great stuff, as long as you use the bondo hardener with it you'll get a nice surface that can be sanded smooth and painted to you liking. bondo is also cheaper then paying to ship your mouse back to amazon then ship the new one to you.

Why the heck does that thing look so dented? *looks at his MX900* I see what you mean about the dip there but on this model it doesn't bother me much. Fill and sand away if you want to change it. Be careful how much you use tho. Dont want to weigh the thing down more than it is already.

If you dont want to send it back then im sure there is someone on the classifieds that would buy it from you. I am not sure about amazons restocking fee but you could cut a 10% deal and probably still make out over sending it back.

If you don't mind a ghetto mod (I bet you do on a sexy thing like that) try duct tape to make it bigger.

After spending about 4 days with it.. Ive become accustom to it. It was just such a huge difference than my old IBM laser mouse. Its not uncomfortable at all, just not as nice as the IBM was. But the performance difference is HUGE. So its well worth it. I think I might leave it be for now. Maybe dissasemble it one weekend to see what all is inside.

I didn't even notice that hump after gripping one of these MX518's today...

they seem smaller than I thought too... my hand fit over it PERFECT... and I have small hands

will bondo really void your warrenty, i'd think you'd have to open it to void it

erm i doubt you could interpret their warranty (which i haven't looked up) that way... I could run the mouse over with my car, use it to drive nails, or whirl it around as a lethal weapon for some hip new geeky homemade kung-fu series, but not have opened it, and i doubt they'd replace it for me ^_~

i've used rolls of duct tape to mark a radius for a window on my case, worked very well, yet another use

if you like duct tape (and this is already WAY off topic) then you should try carpet-tape...

it's essentially double-sided duct tape ^_~
