I seriouslly dont think that is much of an option... from what I have seen the inside of hdd's are static dust free... the way they are made is in a special environment... so I would not suggest taking it apart to try this... Now if you know someone with the right stuff and the ability to actually build a hdd.... then maybe something to play with... But I wouldnt suggest it otherwise...

Awesome idea but I'm pretty sure you remove the top and you trash the drive. Perhaps if it was done in a computer clean room then it might be okay but I doubt any of us have access to one or have one in our house. Guess you could always take an old one and do the mod and just have it installed. Not sure how you'd get it to spin up without having it hooked up to an IDE but maybe just having power to it would be enough. I've got a 2 gig and a 3 gig sitting at home. Both are still good but I've always wanted to see the inside of one anyway.

a particle of smoke is big enogh to @#@# up a hdd

i would also sugest agenst it.

but if you have an old school 100meg hard drive you dont care about you should try it out just to see if it can be done.

Yes this has been done and it has been done successfully. Hard drives aren't as fragile as you think. The guy did this about 6 months ago on his workbench....and the drive is still running fine.

yeah, in fact, I took mine apart, not this one but one I had with me for a ling time, a 4GB drive from an old machine.I was just about to take out the neato magnet when I realized I could still use the HD, so I quickly put it back together. I really wanted to touch the beautiful shinny discs but didn't end up doing so...

Laugh. One of the most fascinating things about hard drives are the big shiny disks. I want to check them out also. Hmmm...perhaps I'll just take this 2 gig apart. I'd be to afraid to do it on a nice 30gig or something.

I saw that. It looked absolutely awsome. It would be great to do that and then add som LEDs to light it up.

one of my friends back in ohio who ran a computer shop got an old hd i think it was a 1 gig, but it had 2 big discs, like really big at least 3 inches tall when it was sitting there, he took the hd apart and just used the discs as a paperwieght, wierd huh

I was at this customers house and he had an old disk hanging on the wall in his basement that was a little bigger than a LP!!

The coolest mod would be a entire plexi glass case for the HDD complete with neon lights. Has anyone ever done something like that?

i especially like the "warranty? what warranty?" on the side of the modded HD.

I just took apart an old 450mb hd after reading this and fumbling thru my tools for 20 minutes looking for those stupid star bits to take the thing apart.I never knew those discs were that thick and made of metal,i took them out and they are suprisingly light. Does anyone know what kind of metal they are made of? I noticed too that inside of the drive there is a little slot with a packet of that silica stuff to absorb moisture. You learn all kinds of stuff by breaking it apart :)
