I dont know when 2.0 comes out, but when it does and you download the client-one line will ask for a user name "dborden" and the next line will ask for your team number 32. This will eliminate the misspellings, typos, ect, so the team will get credit for all of its team members.
I am beta testing it on my main box right now. This box cannot contribute to the team while beta testing since all beta stats will be tossed, but I thought it would be good to get started with it now in order to answer any questions that would arise from the change. It is looking better already and this time it was able to connect. I think that there are still issues with win2k. I will try that out as well. I had some trouble with the installer. It crashed, but I rebooted and created a desktop shortcut to the installer so that it could be run without having any open windows and it was then able to install. As you can tell from this it is still a little rough around the edges. If this client turns out to be even remotely stable then it will probably be the last of the beta clients, or so sayeth the man. Some folks have found ways to make it work in XP, but I don't have XP and couldn't tell you what the differences are.

Couple of questions...
Is the 2.0 (beta) client faster than the current one?
Is it still written in Fortran? Or was it Fortran...
Thanks.

Hey guys check out the sticky about 2.0. Ploaf and I kind of had a question and answer session in there he posted some screen shots of the new client too.:)
It's going to be hard to see if it's any faster yet because they are using 5000 step proteins to test the servers and they finish in a minute or two and are then uploaded. They are moving into larger proteins soon, but the client is still a little unstable so I gave up on the test until the next revision comes out.
Yes, it is written in Fortran. There should be a speed increase for some of clients of different OS's, hopefully. We probably won't see too much of a speed increase on win 98, but it may be a little faster because the Fortran compiler for windows is already effective. When they get a good compiler for the Mac, Linux and when they get a decent Solaris client then it'll be time to watch out. :D

Oh drat... Fortran... C or C++ would be more effective... Atleast the program is useful :D

That's my one fear about going to Linux.... I don't want my f@h to suffer. Anyone know if Win2K run in VMware is as fast as straight Win2K?
SickBoy
Not sure how faat VMware is since I haven't used it. I know that someone is running the win client on a linux box. Can't remember which thread that was though and what was used but it was faster than the Linux version. If it matters, Intel is supposed to have a new Fortran compiler for Linux that should make a difference in the performance of the Linux client.
