Try pinging each machines IP address.
at the msdos box in winme type ping [ip address of ther comp]
and see what you get if it says reply from xx.x..x..x.x
then they are seeing eachother if not:
1: Make sure both machines are on the same primary network logon
2) they both use TCP/IP and are on separate IP addresses.
3) the NICs are installed properly and your cable works!
You'll probably need to enable file sharing in network properties as well.
fiel and print sharing is on - both have manual Ip's - the auto IP wasnt working
both machines each have an IP I selected - #1 192.168.0.1 #2 - 192.168.0.2
subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

I used to have almost the same setup and I got so fed up with it, that I just started adding all the protocalls. Well, guess what, it worked. I added netb and ipx, and the stupid thing ran like a clock. I'm no network expert, so I don't know if that was an ignorant thing to do or not, but it did work.
Well I got most added already so whats a few more..... I will try that
