Im kinda looking at the 21 inch but i dunno if that be big enough for gaming and especially movies.
So would a monitor more than 21 inch be exessive?
na. the biggest crt's they make are 24's
id say thats the cap, after that buy an HDTV!

If it's in your budget I'd just look in to a big widescreen LCD, some of those mega CRTs are very expensive, so an LCD shouldn't be too much more.
I'm pretty sure you can buy a 31" LCD widescreen monitor, so size won't be an issue, not to mention it will actually fit on your desk. :)

Do a search. I've seen used/refurb 24" graphics pro CRTs going for ~$600.
I'd actually stick with a CRT. I had an LCD. Biggest mistake. Too many problems with them.

Maybe then but not now. LCDs are great CRT replacements.
I'll take my NEC FlatScreen 19" CRT over any LCD you can throw at me. Something about the flat screen that makes things so crisp and clear. Every LCD I've seen always looks too...almost pixelated. Like a crappy JPEG image. I guess it's preference though.

That's like an oxymoron.... There are no cheap 24" CRT's

true... I LOVE my viewsonic A90f+...
but I have to say, my neighbors dual 17" viewsonic 8ms LCDs are breathtaking on a Mac G5 with a 6800Ultra... not a deadpixel to date

Keep in mind that most people can barley lift/carry a 21inch crt. When I had one, it weighed in at 90lbs and was so big that it was pretty difficult to get any kind of grip on. I once carried it for 3 blocks and thought several times I was going to drop it.
I dont even want to think of what carrying a 24inch crt would be like- It would probably be a 2 person minimum job unless you are a 300lb body builder.
Contrast:
My 19inch lcd (basically same screen size) weighs maybe 10lbs- I can carry it with one hand. Ive had fewer issues with it than any crt!

That's how I feel. LCDs of the past were awful, we had a few at my old job and it was just embarassing, I couldn't even imagine trying to do something other than read text on it. Game? haha
I've had absolutely zero issues with my LCD, and the "tearing" thing actually went away, I think it was just a glare.
I notice no pixellation or anything like that, it looks just like a CRT only the colors are more vibrant and it's a brighter picture.
For what it's worth:
23" LCD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824116348
$1,650, 23" viewable, 16ms response time typical
24" CRT

$1,350 REFURB. 22" viewable, 22" deep.
No thanks.

I prefere a bigger CRT because ... 1: LCDs are expensive if you want a 16 <ms rate (25ms sucks, face it ;)) 2: Pixels burn out. BUT, there are some major advantages of LCDs 1: Text is really clear 2: Space saver 3: Look cool.

Some 21" CRT's are very heavy and have poor quality picture quality, like the NEC E1100, it weighs near 100 pounds, on the other hand there are great CRT's like Sony small imprint models that weigh about 55 or 65 pounds, usually CRT with Trinitron tubes have outstanding picture quality. Some people have the room for CRT's and others dont have the room, so they buy LCD's. LCD's have come along way and are very capable for gaming.

If that goes for under $250, that is a heck of a bargain, especially for a 24" with a dot pitch of 0.23mm
(His shipping costs are kinda on the high side)

Yes.
I spent $375 after rebates and got a Samsung 930B, freaking awesome. People really seem to like the Hyundai L90. Consider that Samsung is about a year ahead in its LCD technology, well, I went with that.
I also like Viewsonic monitors. For $500 you can definitely get an excellent LCD.

If I were in your shoes, I would search for a killer LCD deal but wait for the right opportunity. Check places like Fatwallet for a killer deal, then research the LCD and the vendor, then buy the best you can afford... preferably at a deep discount

Yeah, buy an LCD when you see a major deal. I picked up the Dell 2005FPW widescreen LCD for $380 a little while ago, and it's fantastic. Great colors, widescreen, and 12ms response time.

Will that be good enough for movies and games? the 12 ms response time.

TN panels are only 6 bit: (2^6)^3=64^3=262,144 color palette.
The others PVA/MVA and IPS panels are 8bit: (2^8)^3=256^3=16,777.216 color palette.
So in order for the TN panel to display ~16.2 million colors, it has to dither the pixels. When watching video/DVDs this dithering causes a sparkle like noise on uniform color areas in the video display. It isn't real bad but it is noticable if you look for it. The native 16.7 million color panels don't have that issue.
The main drawback of the PVA/MVA panels is their slow response times in fast action, dark FPS games that can cause so much ghosting that you get disoriented and killed.
The IPS are faster and more playable but not quite as fast as TN panels. I'd say this might be the best compromise but they are also the most expensive matrixes.

No one LCD panel will do it all so you have to choose what things you want to do. I'm just going to get a TN panel to compliment my PVA panel :D
Large CRTs just use up too much juice and break my 50+year old back.

Ok, so. . .how in the heck can I tell what type of panel my 2005FPW is?
The tech specs says it has a 16.7M color pallette, but is that the truth, or is it a sort of 'compatible with' 16.7M color pallette, if you know what I mean?

It looks like the 2005FPW is a Super IPS display.

Cool. That was quite the review; I already love my monitor, but it's good to see it received as high praise as it did.
