View Full Version : Could this be early Corrosion>?
hey all, ive been running my water cooling setup for about a month now, and i just installed a new hdd cooler and when i shut down my computer and stuck it on my desk i noticed that the water in the tubing was greenish..... one note, i do know that when copper corrodes it bascially gives off kinda green trail...... also, i noticed alittle bit of white build up at the exit point of my heater core and resivoir(the tubing sags alittle so im sure its creating disturbance and thats why the build up is there, also im swaping the tubing out for thicker walled tygon.)... ive added alittle bit of antifreeze to try and stop corrosion when i first setup my system and i also added some petstore algaefix..... i have the danger den tdx block and the maze 4 gpu block with the acetal top, i tried searching on the exact definition for acetal, but of course my internet searching skills are still lost at the moment, so i dont know if its the acetal and copper tops mixing? also the water in resivoir isnt really that green so im thinking maybe the tubing has been staned from the prestone.
Also another question, sinse i have the acetal top for my gpu and copper block for my cpu, and everything else in the system is plastic or rubber, can i just run straight distilled water and just add like 20 drops of the algae fix?

the acetal top is like a glorified hard plastic if im not mistaken. its to help prevent corrosion and shouldnt cause any problems from being in a loop with copper to my knowledge. what type of water did you use when you filled it? the white build up is possibly from impurities in the water you used.
id recommend against just running straight water with just some algea fix you can get better results from a basic antifreeze mix imho.
bear in mind that im anything but a watercooling guru. im sure some more people will chime in and could most likely help you out more than myself as far as additaves and the like go.
heres a quick link on some of the properties of acetal http://www.matweb.com/reference/acetal-polymer.asp

Wellll what is your resevoir? you dont have one thats aluminum do you? if you do al + cu + straight distilled is a no-no. Even an all copper loop bothers me, Im no chemist but I dont think copper will corrode with itself, but Id rather use 15% Antifreeze anyways.
Acetal is the prefered top for any block now. No it wont corrode as its a plastic. The type of corrosion it sounds like you are thinking of is Galvanic corrosion. That happenes between dissimilar metals. "Galvanic pairs." Googling that will give you some good bathroom reading.
algacid (sp?) seems to be used a lot. I use iodine as a lot of others do too. Both seem to have the same effect.

Yeah if you have no al. in your system and only copper and plastic, you would NOT have corrosion. YOu didn't use tap water did you?
ACTUALLY i just discovered something..... but first.
my resivoir is acrylic, its a 5.25 bay resivoir, but to my discovery i just mentioned, the cap on it is..... i think some time of alluminum metal, b/c trying to get it off i sheered away alittle of it with great ease. so i think i do have corrosion, from that little top, i am going to probably tare down my system today and replace the tubing and water and my resivoir b/c the UPS dude just showed up with my dual resivoir.
also to note, i bought a gallon of distilled water from wally-mart when i built my system.
