I'm running win 2000 and I can't launch the command prompt. It says "incorrect dos version" and then it disapears. Anyone know what is happening? I just did a fresh install last week. Will a repair or service pack fix the problem. I never heard of this problem before.
Where are you going or what are you doing to try and bring up a command prompt?

It works now. I think my command.com was from when I had 98 and nt installed. I used cmd.exe in run, and it works fine. It only doesn't work when I type command.com. I think I'm good now, its just was I didn't fell like formating my boot partition when I installed 2000, so the command.com from 98 was still present.

There is no dos in Win2K, that is why command.com will not work. You have a command prompt, and that is all. The more you play with it, the more you will find out that it is a neutered DOS.
And yes, the proper command to open it is cmd.exe.

I know all about that. The cmd prompt is just dos that lacks hardware control. Nt and 2k do not require dos like 98 series, thats why they're a true OS.
I can use COMMAND at the RUN box and get the same prompt as CMD will. The tit;e bars show COMMAND.COM and CMD.EXE respectively but I have no problem using either...they both work the same.
Does this on every single system I have. Strange you guys have problems with yours like that.

Cmd.exe can be poked and proded quite a bit you can get it to load with a version of autoexec.bat and config.sys play with memory settings in the window ect. Just requires some diligence to dig out the information on it.
