Hey all... well I currently have 128 MB of Kingston PC133 SDRAM in my ASUS A7V133 mobo and 256 MB of Crucial PC133 cas 2 SDRAM should be arriving at my house tomorrow. Currently, I have the Kinsgton RAM running at cas 2 but my FSB is at 118. Anyways, my question is, would it be bad to mix two different brands of RAM? Thx. :)
If you're going to be running the same bus speed, then no.
If you plan on running a much higher bus speed then you could run into some problems where the Kingston may not be able to maintain CAS2 at higher speeds when the Crucial can.
If both sticks are going to be running at 118MHz all the same then use them both. Kingston is pretty solid memory.

Ok it arrived today, so now I got 384 MB PC133 SDRAM running at cas 2 in my comp... 128 MB of it is Kingston, and 256 MB of it is Crucial. It works fine and I don't think I will be putting any in the third DIMM slot since I am on Windows 98 SE. I hear it can't take much more than 384 MB. It's working fine, it's not bad, I noticed a small improvement in speed actually when loading up a few proggies. :D Now if I only stop being lazy and buy some ASII since I lost that generic thermal goop... then I could unlock this Duron and try and get it to 133 FSB. :)
What is stopping you from running at 133MHz or higher??? You got the ram & mobo to do it.

OK I will try now but in the past it hasn't been able to boot at 8.0 x 133... :\ at least I think I tried it before. :D Lemme try now :)

Nope it won't boot. All I get is a beeping sound over and over again, and I have to turn off the psu to restart the comp. Then it auto-brings me back to the BIOS and tells me I ran the CPU frequency too high. :( So that's why I need to unlock it. Run the multiplier lower I guess.
Yup;) you gotta lower the multiplier first.

OK so I decided to mess around with my settings a bit now and what I did was I set the RAM to 133 separate from the FSB. From there I put the FSB at 106 and then the RAM automatically went to 139 or 140, can't remember which. And now my computer won't even boot, I can't even get to the BIOS. All it does is beep over and over again when I turn it on. I didn't even o/c anything too dramatically, and this happens. So..... how do I reset the CMOS? The manual says to "short" this certain jumper or something, I know what part it is, but I don't understand how to "short" it... can't I just take out that Lithium battery that's right next to it?
(In case you are wondering, I am posting this from an old P II 300 Mhz)

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!
I thought about the possible causes of the system not even booting to the BIOS and I thought to myself, "Well, it is running at cas 2 and the Kingston is rated at cas 3. So maybe it can't handle 140 Mhz at cas 2." Lo and behold, I took the Kingston out and left the Crucial in.... now it is fine. Maybe I should just buy another 256 MB stick of cas 2 PC133 Crucial... that is if Windows 98 SE would run well with 512 MB of RAM... :\
Have you unlocked that chip yet? Let it run at 800MHz @ 6 X 133/33 so that you don't run your AGP & PCI higher than spec. If they are both PC133 then there should be no problems running both of them at 133MHz. O/C it when it's stable. Windows 98SE & ME will both run with 512Mb. I just installed 3 systems with 512Mb each two of them W98SE & one ME & no probs

win98se can take 512mb.....
well at least my second rig's win98se can
to clear the CMOS, unplug the PS from the wall, then take a flat-bladed screwdriver and short the 2 contact points close the the battery. That'll fix you up! ^_^
The simplest way to reset the CMOS is with the jumper. There are 3 terminals (usaully) & two of them are jumpered by a connector, terminals 1 & 2. All you have to do is transfer the jumper to terminals 2 & 3 and it'll be cleared. Do unplug everything & refer top the manual for detailed instructions.

Nope, I haven't unlocked it yet. I need to get some Arctic Silver II... is there anyplace that will accept personal checks for it... I don't have a credit card and it was tough just to get my dad to use his to get that Crucial RAM. I need a credit card badly  I had some generic thermal grease but I lost it, I think my mom threw whatever I had left out, so I figure I should just get some ASII this time. One of these days I will buy a better HSF too.

Ok thx d00d. I will have to order another 256 MB stick of PC133 cas 2 Crucial RAM soon then. :D
