View Full Version : I have an Evergreen Spectra AMD 400 upgrade in gateway P166XL: More speed?

I started with an old P166XL from Gateway. The motherboard has a date of 1994 on it. I think the motherboard is a Thor. Can't find much info on it. The Gateway book for the MB is almost useless. I guess I'm riding a dinasour here...

I changed the P166 for the new Evergreen 400 upgrade last year. Runs great, but I crave more speed. Can this contraption of mine be pushed any further? Has anyone had any luck with a combo like this?

I see that Evergreen has a new 500 AMD upgrade. Should I start with one of these first? I mean, would the 500 be a better choice for overclocking? I'm almost ready to get a new machine. However, I might just try find something used and cheap that over-clocks like stink first, and save a bundle...

Anyway, can this combo get any faster for me? Anybody have any experience with the Evergreen Spectra upgrades?

thanks a bunch!

Hope that helps the confusion.

Also, the Spectra manual tells me that the Multiplier perm. set...

I got a processor from evergreen. I installed it then tried playing Q2 an counter strike only to find out that it didn't even work with my graphics card in 3D.

Your best bet is just to buy a whole new system their pretty cheap now if you build them from scratch. Or even use some of the stuff from your old system.

What kind of graphic card, MB, system do you have? I was going to try a ge force card with my system.(I have already upgraded my box with the k6 from spectra) Now I am worried it will not work...

Hi,
I used to have a Evergreen 400MHz upgrade, i installed it into my old P133 and didn't get ****! If i were you, i would just upgrade from scratch. But if you don't have much cash, you could buy a socket 7 mother board (which are quite cheap now), which could speed it up, a little :)

Hope i helped,

you can make a whole new system for a little more thin $300

with the games and apps that are coming out nowadays you need a faster computer just to run thim

The system I put it in was a P2 233 an the mobo was an intel AL440LX. The video card I used in it was a geforce2 mx (same as I have in my system now). The video card worked in windows but didn't work in games like I said.

btw, I had to call the guys at evergreen an they said the only card they got working in 3D was a voodoo5 an that was just one person.
