I need to install WIN98 or WIN98se to a computer that has WIN95 on it. I know easiest way is to reformat, but I'd MUCH rather not in this case since it isn't my computer(it's my nephews teacher's). I checked the Hdd and really the only thing I saw worth keeping is the pictures of her baby pics of her son. So last resort I'll try and back them up and format away.

WIN98 full version
WIN98se i thought was full version, but now im thinking it's an upgrade version since it wants me to install WIN98 first when I try to use it.

When I try to use the WIN98 full version it says I already have a windows operating system and I need to used WIN98 upgrade version instead...is there anyway around that?

the win95 is bad i'm guessing since I have yet to be able to get it to boot to windows95 normally or safe mode without immediately having explorer crash upon entering windows. Right now I can run programs from TASK, but no other way to get things to work without using the TASK run application

ANY suggestions greatly appreciated.

Offload the pics to a Zip drive, a CD-R using a burner or another HDD. As you can't seem to get into Win95 at all, this may be impossible. But you may well be able to do it in MS-DOS mode.

If the version of Win98 is a full version, just wipe her HDD and install it from scratch. Then put the SE Upgrade right on top of it.

If this HDD has W95 on it, it's probably WAY overdue for a wipe and reinstall. If there's no way to save the pics, but W95 won't run at all, whaddaya gonna do? Give her a call and let her know that she has no choice, the pics along with everything else has to be wiped.

Awww. That's sweet......

Wipe and reinstall is the best way for any OS upgrade. Once you install 98SE, go to the Windows update site and get all the latest updates and security patches from Microsoft as well.......

I just use Deltree instead of a format to preserve some file directories if need be. You can get the same effect just gotta delete the right directories :D
