I have a 160Gig Seagate IDE drive. It's an external, connected via USB2.0. I am only going to use it to back up Ghost image files and some other files as well as needed.

Is there a need to partition the drive or not? I wouldn't think so, but I wonder if people partiion their external drives..and if they do...why? I am new to partitioning.

If you want to use it you have to partition it, before you can format you will have to create a partition.

I think Viper69 means having more than just a single partition. Its up to you how many partitions you have. If you just gonna be dumping stuff on there then just stick with a single 160GB partition.
