Hi!

I am new to building my own systems and i was seeking some advice.

I know that a I want 64bit cpu, I would also like 1 gig of RAM and a 256 mb gfx card as the comp will be used for gaming.

Can anyone recommend a system spec for me please?

I have $1400 to spend

Thanks
James!

Either a Intel 6X0 Series Cpu or a Venice or San Diego AMD Chip
Depending on the Platform, either a 6800GT or Ultra or a ATI x800xl or x850xl
Ram is either some high end OCZ maybe VX or something of your pic.

Your best bet is to float around these forums, and see what other people are raving about, and then do you research, read some reviews, and see what you like

And Welcome to the Forums

Thanks man.

I have seen people raving about the 3000+ venice and oc'ing it but i don't kjnow how to do this i was also thinking about the 3500+ with the X800Xl but truthfully i want the Pc for gaming so for cpu im stuck. :bang head I have just selected Kingston 1gb DDR ram pc3200. Any more advice on the cpu guys

thanks

First of all, :welcome: to the forums

Secondly, overclocking is easy! :) (Once you get the hang of it) This place is an entire forum dedicated to overclocking, so there are tons of people to help you out

But if you really don't want to overclock your cpu, go with a A64 Winchester. The new Venice and San Diego cores have pushed the older Winchesters down in price by quite a bit, so you should get an alright deal. The Winchesters were great cpu's, but they didn't overclock that well.

Good choice. Kingston are as good as make as ever. However - it all depends on whether or not you want to overclock. If you are intending to overclock (and you should, go for it! :)) then you probably want to go with something like PC3400 or higher rated RAM, and maybe with a more overclocking-orientated brand, like OCZ.

But it's up to you. Have fun with building your comp

Ah ok well i don't know how to overclock and i am purely going to use the pc to game so i need as best cpu as possible that compatible with the Asus A8N SLI. So great cooling I could use some advice for that too.

Thanks for the welcome guys

Cooling depends - again - on if you're overclocking.

If you were an extreme overclocker, you'd go for something ridiculous like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835109118
Expensively priced too.

If you're a mild or avergae overclocker (like most of us) you could go for something quite cheap, yet very good like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835186126

If you're not overclocking you can probably just use any compatible heatsink. Somethinglike the one above should be fine, as its $20, or if you buy a CPU in a retail package, it comes with a cheap heatsink so you could just use that.

Question

It would help if we knew the type of games you had it mind. People that use the top of the line FPS's games I recommend a stronger vid card than others
and sometimes a differant MB.

This gives you room to later add a second vid card for SLI and future upgrades.Personally I prefer a full tower case(examples Aspires full towers as well as others) but this case does have suficent room.If your an ATI man you could save money (in the short run) going with the Ati vid card.Or if you want the Asus A8n series are also very strong MB's.If you thought you might sometime overclock I would add a little money and buy a little higher quality ram. This is a good starting place but I recommend research on the Memory forum and the power supply forum as well as the motherboard and memory forum.I would also go to Toms Hardeware and study thier vid card reviews.Good Luck and welcome to the Forums.

Case is a personal preference. I would get a 6800gt and a 3200+ Venice so if you later down the road want to overclock, you can with a nice heatsink. The RAM I recommend is 1gb OCZ Plat. Revision 2 from Newegg.com
