Laptop monitor issues

Well I wanted to hook up a second monitor to my laptop (its a sony with windows xp home edition) and I can set it up to use two monitors at once (in the split screen mode) but when I try to use the 2nd monitor as the primary monitor the monitor says no signal and goes dead and the laptop LCD shrinks to 800 x 600. Well I go and look at the secondary monitor driver and it says defualt monitor for the driver (isn't it suppose to say plug and play monitor?). So is my issue the driver or the integrated video card?

The integrated video card is an Intel 82830M Graphics Controller. The second monitor is an NU LCD Monitor

Well its my monitor because i tested it on my desktop and its posts then when windows loads its gives me the no signal/check cable error. Why would it all of a sudden do this (it used to work on my desktop).

Nevermind im not sure if the monitor is the issue... I tried another monitor and that monitor doesn't work either. WTF how could monitors stop working on two different comps. I didn't change any settings on my desktop.
