Good humor..
Wouldn't it be possible for the manufacturers to fill the drive with some sort of liquid for bearing and noise reduction? Would also make it less sensitive to shocks.
The things they imagine...

Now what would really inpress me is if it still worked after it dried.
Good laugh. That vid is a keeper. :)

Uh oh, he opened the disk in a dusty room. HE MIGHT HAVE RUINED THE DISK! :O

The head actually rides on a cushion of air, but only when the disk is up to speed. The head has a park position that it sits in, while the disk is spinning up, it actually scratches the head a little in the park position. Once the disk is up to speed, it floats...about 5 microns I think is the average height above the surface of the disk.
Then while its floating it starts the read / write process, that is one of the reasons that a disk can be damaged due to sudden power failure, because the head can lose its cushion while its over data sectors.
Even though that was funny it was hard to watch

thats a loud harddrive..
This hard drive needs to meet the hydro-wave bearing...

Well, it was a quantam drive...
Although I'd like to see the same done, but instead of water... use gasoline or diesel fuel!
Then with the aid of a lighter or match or whatever... turn it into its name ;)
.....
Known with that :) But why not replace the air cushion with a blob of fluid? If you will the entire drive chamber with it, there should be no problem at all.
me thinks - "non conductive fluid"

eww, quantum hard drives. thats a good vid. im surprised it didnt die. im thinking non conductive fluid aswell.

lol, thats awsome, i have a locked 10 gig seagate from an xbox spinning in my pc right now, i should make a new video
:p :p :p
That was amazing :)
Everyone at my job laughed hard as hell.
I don't think that the magnetic force would be there between the heads and the platters if therre was a fluid in between because a liquid is more dense than air. Also it would be much harder for the platters and actuator arm to move in a fluid.. just like its hard to run in a pool.

My mom's got a quantam drive. As soon as I can get her to upgrade... :attn:

I remember a guy awhile ago burning a stick of RAM he didn't liked.

The fluid is too thick, and it would enhance corrosion greatly, also, what if it leaked out  normally hdds have a filter to allow for differences in air pressure, which is one of the reasons that smoking aroung them, on average reduces their life /end RABIT trail :D

Hehe yeah ;) I've seen alot of PC internals 'smoked' but no HDD yet...

Heh heh, you should come to the shooting range w/ me sometime, I used my ak, and I had a pump action 12 gauge then. Alas, I had no camera w/ me, but I put a good 80+ rounds from both weapons into the old bird, and the hdd itself turned into a stainless piece of swiss cheese...mmm...swiss cheese.

lol that was hilarious
that was very funny. but don't diss the quantum drives. my 2.1GB bigfoot ran for 8 years no problem.
Owww.... That was painful to watch! Cool watching the water fly away under the force of 7200 (5400?) RPMs, but painful.
/me agrees with lowfat -- I've got a Quantum 11GB drive from an HP that's still chugging along :D

If they filled it up with water .. id imagine the HDD RPMs would go down the toilet ...

Heh. I was tlaking about the old fireball line. We actually had 5 fireball hard drives in computers out of 200 total machines that caught fire. Needless to say, we don't use them anymore.

Hehehe. In third grade, we took a few old HDDs and drilled straight through them with an 8mm bit. Then we put the PCB back on and fired em up...there was a terrible sound that reminded me of the titanic when it sank...whole platter chamber was filled with steel dust.

That was both hilarious and at the same time gut-wrenching. That thing was worth at least $10 on eBay. Why, oh why, am I in such a desperate need of money.

Isn't it odd that the FIREball drives caught on fire....
just circumstantial?

Muahaha i know that attitude. Everything is worth something on ebay :D

you must be getting on in years
My w/c system leaked over my hdd, there was enough water inside for it to drip out when i shook it, also the front was corroded etc.
Still runs .....
=)
you must be getting on in years
You know, that same sound you get when you destroy a Battlecruiser in Homeworld 2 :D
