View Full Version : IP address and gateway always the same.
i just recently noticed my default gateway is the same as my IP (dynamic) everytime i get connected, same numbers. could that affect the connection stability? what is wrong with having for both the same number?

If you're not having problems, I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes DHCP servers can be a bit odd.
actually im getting problems but i dont know if thats causing it. its an ADSL connection and very frequently i need to wait about a minute to get the information i have requested (website, file, anything to download). 2 minutes navigating, 1 minute waiting for the last thing i requested.
that's a dns problem. Check the ip addresses on your dns servers and then ping each one. I'll bet the first one listed is down and it's got to go to the second one. If the first one doesn't reply to your ping but the second one does, swap their order in your network prefs and you'll connect really quickly.

also make sure that unless you need one that you are not trying to go though a proxy server.

im not sure if i understood that. i opened the winipcfg and despite i got check out both the dns servers the ip addresses was the same for both. i then tried pinging the ip address and i got it. tried pinging also both the dns servers and got it from both..
what am i doing wrong?
just another thing: always i try to release everything and then to renew i get an error message saying the server DHCP isnt available when trying to renew...

your gateway should be the ip of either your router if your using one or the ip of your isp's router. Your Ip depending if your using a router will probally be dynamically assigned. Your ip and you gateway should not be the same . this will cause an ip conflict and cause your connection to be flaky as heck...

I do Qwest.net DSL Tech Support for a living and I knwo what if you have a DSL Modem dependant on the computer for power (specifically Intel 2100, 2200, 3200 and Cisco 605) then the default gateway will be the same and the dynamically assigned IP. This is so because these card/routers and two things and integrated router and NIC.

my case must be similar to that. dont know if my adsl modem is dependant for power but the ISP technician said its dependant for the IPs dinamically addressed and thats normal the gateway be the same as them.
i have checked that out on another computer with the same internet service and the gateway also was always the same as the IP.

Your nic card probably does double duty as a router there are a few out there that do. Who does you internet conection go though.
