I was considering buying a high resolution monitor (2048x1536) for use as a monitor on my pc and on a future xbox360/ps3. If i hooked the monitor and the console up directly, would the console be able to show stuff correctly letterboxed and at the right resolutions? or, do you think this idea just won't work?

The thing about the next gens is that both are supposed to output HD content, so you should look for something that is HD-ready.

as far as i know, thats higher than any of the hd resolutions, so it should work in theory. if the console had a dvi out or an adapter to dvi, i could probably get it to work though, dont you think?

sounds like a dangerous proposition until we know more about how exactly the next gen consoles will be doing their hd outputting. i mean, if it's a DVI (which seems to be how things are headed) then you're probably fine. but if they output in that 3-cable component stuff, then i dont know of a single monitor that can take that kind of input.

in any event, you'd do best to wait until one of them is actually available. cause no matter if you're looking to buy a nice lcd monitor or an actual HDtv, prices will be lower and or products will be better in 6mo to a year (when xbox and ps3 come out, respectively).

It's going to be HDMI which there is a converter to DVI, the difference between the two besides the connector is mainly that HDMI is copy-protected where DVI is not, so with HDMI you cannot make a digital-to-digital dub.

Intresting information :) are these convertors cheap?

If you can get the Dreamcast to run on a monitor and look sharper then I friggin hope the newest consoles can. All you needed for the dreamcast was this little box for 15 bucks and on a monitor it looked much sharper and clearer it was nice for Dreamcast.
And yes monitors are pretty much HD so it should work.

Yeah, the DreamCast looks NICE on a VGA, honestly much better than the PS2 about equal to the GameCube and not as good as the Xbox. The converters to go from HDMI to DVI are pretty cheap, it's the converters to go from HDMI or DVI to component that are expensive as heck.

The difference between the DreamCast running on a VGA monitor vs the new machines' HD is that the DreamCast could only do 640x480 or what is now known as 480p where the new machines can do 1080i which is 1920x1080 A HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!

I believe the new machines can run 1080p. Will it always be at 60hz though? Do we have that information yet? I can do 85hz at 1080p.

EDIT: Just tested 120hz

very impressive, yuriman. what are you doing that with? and i think only the ps3 is going to do 1080p, the x360 is supposed to do 720p, from what i hear. could be wrong. of course, the ps3 will do dual HD outputs... something the x360 cannot dream of.

Most TVs cannot do 1080p, it is 99.9% of the time 1080i, 720p and 480p and 480i.

I was lead to believe that the Xbox360 will use a component connection, and the PS3 HDMI.

I'm using my monitor, of course. That is what this discussion is about...

Well if the 360 is Component only then you are left with 2 choices Yuriman, go through a tuner card or get one of those $100 component to VGA converter boxes. FYI for home-theater folks, with this box you can also get a $20 VGA-DVI adapter thus being able to convert from a DVI-only source to Component. There is also a DVI to HDMI converter but I wonder if there'd be anoy/much quality loss using 3 coverters at the same time.
