View Full Version : Best PIII bang for the buck?
I am looking at upgrading my Celeron 800, and going with a PIII. I was just wondering which PIII gives the best bang for the buck once OC'ed? I heard that the 733 was the best, but all that I can find on Pricewatch for that chip is the 133 fsb one. I would rather get the 100fsb one for better OC'ing, but havent found one. Did they even make the 733 in 100fsb? So what PIII chip would you recommend? I have a socket 370 mobo.

I think the P3 700e is the best bet. I have a 600 which overclocks easy to 840 but will go no further. I also have a 750 that does 1gig but requires 1.90 vcore to do it. Check the data base on the Overclockers home page I think you will find that the 700 is the best bet. The only problem is that they are getting hard to find.
There were no 733 P-III CPUs made with 100 FSB. To be honest, you're not going to get much improvement going from a Celeron 800 to a P-III. A P-III will not overclock much faster, although a P-III will benchmark a little better due to more cache. If you do decide to go with a P-III anyway, I'd make sure you get a cD0 stepping, but most of those are 133 FSB chips.

Hi TUK101,
Take a look to this topic http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?threadid=38633 there's a very promising chip :)

I'm pretty happy with my 800EB's. They have hit 1 gig easily and I prefer 133Mhz FSB over 100, even if it makes OCing a little harder.

I had pretty good luck with the PIII 800e(secc) as it was perfectly stable at 1gig at default voltage. Recently sold it to a fellow OCer and he has it running at 1.1 with a slight voltage increase/
I upgraded to a PIII 1gig EB and just got my new SH6 mobo today(Thanks Skip) so I can exceed the fsb limitation of my P3V4X...Going to see how high this puppy will go soon enough
A good friend of mine ordered a PIII fpga 700 and the retailer ran out and sent him a PIII 750e, and I have to say that its a turkey only running stable at 866.....I advised him to return it and wait on a PIII 700 which is one of the best overclockers.
My best advise is to buy a retail box that way the vendor cant test the CPU to determine its overclockability, and you have a better chance at getting a great cpu, but you never know its a cr@pshoot.

Thanks, I read that post before I made this one. I just wanted to get some users opinions. I know that some say that I wouldnt notice that big of an improvement going to a PIII chip compared to my Celeron, but I have used the PIII at school (tech. school) and like the way that it responds so fast.

Just read a thread from Ebola. He has a PIII 1000E which he has overclocked to 1240 using PC100 ram 124FSB. He shows a Sandra Cpu benchmark that is sitting right there with a 1.2 Athlon. Thread should be close to this one on the cpu page.
