View Full Version : Lower latency: Crucial single-sided vs. OCZ Titanium or Patriot 2-3-2

I've narrowed my RAM choices to the three below based on price, published specs, and the reputations of the manufacturers, but I could use some input from people who actually have these modules.

I'll use either four of these single-sided Crucial 512MB DIMMs:

or this 2x1GB OCZ Titanium kit

or this similar Patriot set from PDP

I'll be going for a low latency setup because this rig will have 2GB. That means 512 megabit chips, and I doubt I can overclock these enough to beat 2-2-2-1T even at slightly less than 200MHz. However, most of the results I've read focus on maximum overclocks rather than tight timings.

Please let me know how well your RAM "narrowtimes", that is, how it functions when pushed beyond spec for low latency rather than high speed, and what motherboard and CPU you are using. I'm mostly lookng for results on AMD systems, as that's what I'm putting together and I'm not sure how to compare results with radically different memory controllers.

I'm interested in the highest 2-2-2-1T speed for the modules I'm considering -- even if that means a RAM clock under 200mhz. Or, if they can't be made stable with timings that tight, what is possible with this RAM on your system? As running four single-sided sticks at 1T is only possible with AMD's latest memory controller and I've yet to hear of anyone actually trying it, I'm not expecting too many responses for four of the Crucial single-sides at 1T. But your best results with two sticks will give me some idea of what's possible.

Educated speculation is also welcome.

Thanks everyone :)

I use the crucial that you have there, 2x 512's w/ a barton 2600

Crucial is a good company imo, they also have the ballistix low latency series, but I have never used them myself.

I've had good luck with Crucial too, though I'm not sure about the low latency potential of these sticks. It's only rated for 3-3-3-6, and the chips are the same density as you'd find on a 1GB double-sidded DIMM. Have you ever tried to run yours at or near 2-2-2-1t, redwraith?
