MULTIMILION DOLLAR IS SPENT FOR ALL COMPANY'S FIREWALL
AND THEY FAIL SO BAD.
MY QUESTION IS.
WHAT MAKES US THINK THAT OUR CHEAP DOLLAR FIREWALL WILL COVER OUR ASS FROM BEING KICKED BY HACKERS.?
SHOULD WE STILL INVEST OUR DOLLARS ON FIREWALL INSTEAD OF GAMES?
LET DISCUSS, SHALL WE?
I don't have firewall installed in my computer.

actually it's networking.........
however a firewall can be really cheap and far superior to "personal firewall" or any other software firewalls.
I'd recommend a smokin fast P75 or P90 system w/o a hard drive to do the job. Cheap and superior as I said.
see www.freebsd.com or www.freesco.org for some great firewalls.

Yes, it's cheap and superior than personal firewall. The company still is hacked.
Is it worth to buy firewall because if HACKERS want, they will get inside our computer easily. ?
we can save money to upgrade our computer.

well zonealarm and tiny firewall are free for home use btw:D the reason you see the multimillion dollar companies getting hacked is that they have services running to the outside world, and whenever you have services running there is the probability that someone will eventually discover a hack for that service.
the only reason i run my firewall is to protect from the stupid script kiddies scanning my box for the default port that netbus runs on.

they have to
comptuer security is kind of like warfare
some one comes out with something
then some one else come up with something to kick the ass of the old something
infantry>tank>hellicopter>airsupport>surface to air missles> on and on and on
its a constanly evolving feild just beucase every once in a while it fails horably doesnt mean you should just give up it means you evolve with it.
the hackers and stuff have the advanges of time and numbers
the coroporations have the advantages of paid expertieses and the law.

seriously you are nuts
i say something
you say something of equal or greater value back
so on and so forth
what do yo u think about what we just said?
The reason your computer at home isn't hacked is because you don't have anything good on it. YOu probably don't have a front end of a SQL database with thousands of credit card numbers, you don't have top secret files, and unless someone wants to use you as a DOS zombie or look through your pRon you are safe.

YEAH. Same here.
I use crap like netbus. but not destructively. And ONLY on friends. Basic NAT firewall would stop me no problem. :D

FIREWALL IS NEEDED?
softwebdev dude your funny - ever consider changing your name to softheaddev???
personal firewalls are great becuase to be hacked someone must know first off that you are there in the first place to begin looking for those ''certain holes'' - a quick scan will give him or her a list of IP's not protected - what car would you steal one with the doors unlocked and key in the ignition or the one with the flashing lights and pit bull inside?

thank you for your comment. I like my name. SOFTWEBDEV.
We don't have to talk seriously every time.............Smiling will make us YOUNGER.
The personal firewall are great since they are free and increase Internet Secruity... But the point of firewalls is to do its job and try the best to block the hackers from hacking your computer....
Your just putting the firewall on the wrong side saying it wont do nothing but let hackers.....
They dont make these programs for fun heh...
I use zone because I don't wanna be bothered by all the script kiddies...when they scan a zone, I don't show up, they don't bother me..I'm happy
My general opinion is, if someone's good enough to get through multiple hardware firewalls, and they're after you, you've done something seriously wrong....
Script kiddies, on the other hand, scan ip ranges for vulnerable machines because they DON'T know how to get around even a simple firewall..which is why I have a simple firewall...
*doesn't have anything worth while on his machnie, nor does he want to be a DDOS zombie*
First of all, I have nothing of worth to anyone but me on my pc's.
Second, I use hardware and software firewalls for the reasons mentioned above, and to help defeat any self-propagating virii that are scanning.
Does this make me safe?
No.
Would it have been smarter to save the $100 bucks and not use any firewalls?
No.
I am simply at less risk of someone getting in. Noone with the skill to get into my computers would bother- there is nothing for them here!
The script kiddies out there ( who seem to think it's fun to wreck someone ELSE'S day) are sure to lack the knowledge and talent to get in to my pc's with the firewalls/security I have.
What are the odds of having trouble with no firewall/security? Pretty low maybe, but I had an email server get hacked into, and some files uploaded onto my pc. Which is why I decided to run firewalls: Since then I have been scanned, port-bombed etc, but have had 0 intrusions.
I kinda like SoftHeadDev- think about it!:D
Next question?
I've got a friend who has a Cisco Pix on his dsl line. He's also got 14,000 worth of routers/switches in his home for training. Cisco Pix is like putting a low-jack on your tricycle.

Rule of thumb is: the larger your network is, the easier it is to get into.
If you have one computer with a software firewall, it is more difficult to get into than a large network of 5 computers, with one unprotected or comprimised computer.
For modems (ie: 56k), you really don't need any protection, chances are any hackers will get fed up with the speed and leave, the only thing is that you'll get trojans and stuff that'll run around randomly, but they'll only get in on systems that do dumb stuff like leave shares open with no passwords, etc.
For DSL, Cable, i would suggest either software firewall(s) or simple routers.
For better internet connections: hardware firewall or router (or for workstations, use software firewalls)
The larger the network is, the more there is to keep track of. A single comprimised computer can let someone into the intranet, whether it be a computer in a public area, a laptop, trojan-comprimised computer, or even an extra RJ45 drop in a public area.
