View Full Version : Whoops killed my GF3
Ummm all I get now is a jumble of random letters at startup and post screen. Ummm and windows does'nt load. I just broke my personal best in trashing my own equipment :D
P.S. The most expensive piece of kit I have ever broken was when I was in the navy, I trod on a £95,000 bit of radar!!!

Sorry to hear that man, it really sucks when you break your own stuff. I always want to scream out loud when that happens to me

are you absolutely sure it is broken?
did you see if it isnt plugged in wrong?
btw can you see something on your gf3 itself ... i mean a big black spot or something
btw did you have to pay for that radar? hope not
what is it you've done to it?

The question should be what I hav'nt done to it :) Yeah the thing is trash but I already got the RMA number issued. All I got to do is make it look like it has'nt been modded, no worries :D

OMG I go to school and have been away for three or four weeks now. I come back and this is the first thing I read :( sorry to hear you loss. I nuked my GF2MX and it did the same thing your card is doing. I was geting jarbled letters at boot-up and windows would never load. I found a spot on my card where I had broken three of the traces so I did micro surgery with a super ultra mega fine micro trace pen :D The card works now believe it or not. From what i'v heard I got very lucky, usualy dead is dead.
One thing I do know...once you go forward there's no going back :) Hope you got the bones for a new GF3 card :)

RMA
First off, sorry to hear that you fragged your GF3. On the one hand I hate to hear that you are attempting to replace it as defective when you zapped the puppy, on the other hand...with the price of a GF3 today, you may as well hump em' back...they deserve it and can well afford it...It's just so DISHONEST tho...

mmMMmm dishonesty...
*stares at his broken msi ktz pro2a*
however, if i was honest, id still have that board and not my epox 8kha... at least i got an upgrade out of it though.
how big of a mod did you do though? i wouldnt have a problem with rmaing something that you modded, as long as the mod didn cause the problem. like puttin a better hsf on and then something else on the card blowing up...
Zuck Gou :)

it's partially because of losses like this, that companies have to pay higher insurance rates and charge more for parts. You're not doing anything but contributing to the problem if you RMA that. You broke it, you should accept the consequences of voiding your warranty.

Dishonest? Mabey.
Wrong? Certainly not. Wrong is when you buy a GeForce3, write a 3 on your Geforce 256, put it in the GF3 box and return it to office depot. (I haven't done this but I have a friend who hasn't payed for a video card upgrade in 3 years)

What your friend is doing is both wrong and dishonest. It's incredible what you can get away with tho.
The question is where do you draw the line? I'm sure we all know this one: Um......well......I don't know........um..........it just kinda blew up...........and smoke came out of it.
The hardware companies have whole departments that decide wether their part was faulty or wether you killed it i.e. overclocked, undercooled, smashed with a sledgehammer etc.
Not like the manufacturers ALWAYS play fair though either.
Some of the Gf3 cards out there come with lousy fans that because they hang upside down in your machine evetually break down and kill your card - usually-just after your warranty expires. Considering the price of the Gf3 this is just plain unacceptable.
I say send them the card and let THEM decide whos fault it was. Just don't tell lies.

Yeah, I think what Foxmulder said is ok...Are you absolutely sure that it was you who killed the card.
Couldn´t it have been a "real" hardware defect?

I fail to see the difference.
Comparing your actions to someone who you percieve to be doing something worse is just a sorry excuse to justify your actions. If it's dishonest, it's wrong........no matter to what degree.
As I said, you voided your warranty........now live with it and buy another card. Why should the mfg have to pay for your mistake?

...and why should a computer vendor who is hanging on by the skin of his teeth have to eat it either? People wonder why they cannot get service at computer parts retailers anymore, here's why. THEY CAN'T AFFORD IT ANYMORE! Part of the reason they can't afford it is they get stuck with the GF3 because the manufacturer refuses the RMA as an abused product.
When you modded the GF3, you voided the warranty. Take your losses and don't harm the rest of us by contributing to putting another vendor out of business.

Ehhh yeah! A real hardware defect!
It just sorta stopped working......
Have you modified it in any way?
Not at all......(wearing a " 'clock it 'till it smokes" t-shirt)
Are you sure?
Absolutely......(halo shining. 50% overclocking it isn't technically modding it.....:D )
But remember kiddies. Someone has to pay in the end, and its all of us who have to endure higher prices for it.......
sorta like STEALING a motherboard from a kid, yeah???

Hmmmmmmm how do I put this politely
1) The card sold to me, upon modding was found to be a 2-bit put together piece of barely working crud. (see past post on subject of modding it)
2) How anyone with any scruples could get away with charging £300 ($450) for this 50 cent engineering F**K up deserves what they get.
3) I hav'nt gotten away with it yet, I will let you know as we definately have 2 sides to this.
4) This is one of the few times I feel I have been well ripped off.

Well, if it worked fine before you modded it, and performed up to your expectations, then I fail to see how you could have been ripped off. *You* decided to pay the money for it. That's *your* decision. A company can charge whatever they feel like for a something like a video card. Buying a new video card is *not* something that you *ever* *have* to do. It's nice, sure, but it's not necessary for you to survive, or really make your life that much more bearable. You knew the price before you bought it, and you apparently were pretty happy with the results.
Besides, you claimed yourself that it's *your* fault that it died. I don't see why others should have to pay for *your* mistakes. That's a big problem that's been happening lately. People always want others to pay for their mistakes, which hurts *everybody* because it's ultimately the consumer that has to pay for it.

you bought it.........you agreed to the price.......if anyone should feel foolish, it should be the person who agreed to the price AFTER they bought it. If you were dis-satisfied, you should have returned it immediately.........not after you changed the card and voided your warranty.

agian, you chose to pay that price. It's not like they held your family hostage and demanded payment. Do I want that card? YES......do I have one? NO.........I refuse to pay that kind of money for it. Till then I stick with a G2 GTS........no one held a gun to your head.
3) I hav'nt gotten away with it yet, I will let you know as we definately have 2 sides to this.
There are 2 sides yes.......the sale of a product, and the attempt to rip someone off. Hmm.......I'm siding with the vendor against the thief. If you do succeed, I'd rather you not post anything about it. I'd hate to see you influence anyone into becomming a thief as well.
4) This is one of the few times I feel I have been well ripped off.
That my friend is your own fault. If you resent the fact you paid so much, perhaps you shouldn't have.
Well we agree to disagree then.
Ladies n Gentlemen...I see that this has all led to a rather heated debate over the pros n cons of trashing equipment and then pawning it off on the vendor or mfr...What I wonder about here is the WHY it hasn't been MOVED to the debate section...Not an unreasonable question, because as of late the mods have been moving things around quite a bit and couldn't help but wonder why this thread was still in the same place???
Just curious guys, why???

considering I posted around 4am and he posted around 11:30 am.........and no one else has responded but you since, I'd hardly call this a "heated debate".
Let us mod........you just enjoy the board.

HEHEHE
I just killed my gf3 too :) Tell me were u get the rma from, i couldn't find that on the visiontek website??? ( should i call tech support?)
I hadn't realized we were forcing our opinions down one another's throats now?..
I agree to disagree, even if you're right.

heya
well i just fried my voodoo 3 3500 about 10 minutes ago because i overclocked it like no other :P. its my own damn fault though. dont make other people pay for you f.u.c.k.i.n.g. up. thats just B.I.T.C.H.Y. its not the companies fault for building a product that cant handle modification. when they make a product they dont assume people will overclock the product or anything like that. because if they made the products like that, they would have to fix/send sooo many people new products everytime they fry their part due to modding (the consumer can just blame the company because the product was made to be modded, but fries when you try modding it) you f.u.c.k.e.d. up big time when you chose to mod a product that is not made to be modded, and its your own fault. in the words of so many people.

I dont think its right for people to try and mod and thin break there chip and thin send it back
however I fail to see why everyone is saying we will have to pay for it
I dont remember any time that the prices where low for a new produce
the companys are getting TONS of money from these $10 to make video cards.........
we are just getting no support/service because they dont HAVE to give us support.
there making a killing the way they are right now so why would they change?
