hi, i've been reading oc.com for a month or so now, but im definitely new to the forums, and i have my first question . . .
im currently running my tbird 1.4 at about 1.53 (10.5x145) my temps are pretty low -- under 40 -- and i want to go higher, but whenever i go any higher (fsb or clock multiplier) the screen where it says windows xp loading or whatever (im running windows xp corp) wont show up i just get a black screen, and sometimes (depending on how high i go, that first thing that loads when you start your comp (where you can go to cmos) counts my ram at like 640 or so instead of 768 (and then it wont load windows).

also, i noticed that windows loads slower at 1.53 than 1.47 which i think is pretty weird.

i have no idea what my stepping or anything is (i didn't know about that when i built my computer) if that matters i guess i can go check.

does anyone have any ideas why this happens (or, better, how i can fix it so i can oc more . . . .:) )

my computer is really stable right now at 1.53 incase anyone was gonna ask (i can benchmark and stuff)

It seems to me that your Computer is not very stable. What benchmarks were you running? A good one is 3DMark 2001. If it cuts out on you before it is finished then its not very stable. Also try some burn-in tests for stability, like prime 95. Once you find a speed where all these tests are perfect, you will then keep it there. Let me know how you made out.

i can run 3dmark2001 to completion with no problems, (and temps right after are about 40-41)

i also benchmarked with sisoft sandra

dont remember any results but i did blow away the friend i compared with hehe :)

ill try that prim95 thingie, but i think im stable.

I would still lower my speed down to the point where your computer runs glitch free.

Could be your memory. What is your cas set at? If it is at cas 2 you probably need to go to cas 3 to go any higher at least on the fsb.

yeah its set at cas2

its the fastest setting i can put it on in cmos, (5-2-2 i think? something like that)

so if i set the cl to 3 i can pump up the fsb, hm good idea,

but will i see performance benefits at a higher fsb with cas3 or at slightly lower with cas2?

I would go with a slightly lower bus at cas two.

I leave my computer at a lower MHz than it can actually run stable at. I can run my system at 1.52 without a problem but I keep it at 1.44 it seems to run better there(loads faster and so on). It's all about finding that happy medium that will allow all your components to run at there max and that's not always the maximum MHz.

ya i noticed that also i can run all day and all progs at 1500-1550, but at 1450 windows loads faster, i think it is due to at 1500 i have to run fast or normal settings, at 1450 i can run turbo settings and really fly in windows

yeah, i thought it might be some ghetto windows thing.

i guess ill leave it at 140x10.5 (1.47) then, since i guess windows likes it more.
