Well, I'm gonna get some money this summer to do my very first build. I already have alot of the parts, as I have been getting replacements for the gateway below *points to sig*

So, stuff I'm gonna buy are:
AMD (AMD...just....kicks ***...):
EPoX EP-8KRAI-X Socket A (Socket 462) VIA KT600 ATX AMD Motherboard $45.00

AMD Athlon XP 2800+ Barton 333MHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket A Processor $104.99

Intel (cheaper >_<):
ECS 848P-A V2.0 Socket 478 Intel 848P ATX Intel Motherboard $44.99

intel Celeron D 335 Prescott 533MHz FSB 256KB L2 Cache Socket 478 Processor $71.99

Other parts, including what I currently have:

Nvidia GeForce FX 5100 (note, nothing seems to come up on this video card, so, here are the specs)
128MB
128-bit
Geforce FX5200 core
AGP 8x

EXCELSTOR J840 40GB 7200 RPM 2MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA133 Hard Drive $46.00

ATRIX PSCI-480 ATX 480W Power Supply 115/230 V UL, CE, CB, FCC $27.00

Mad Dog CD-RW 52x/32x/52x (is that right?)

Floppy Drive, 1.44

Logitech X-220 2.1 Speakers

So, I'm leaning towards Intel (for obvious reasons...I'm 13), but I love AMD so much more...and the Intel processor only has 256 KB of L2 cache

Total AMD setup: $222.99 before tax
Total Intel setup: $189.98 before tax

Intel is $33.01 cheaper. AMD kicks-***.

Which one?

Those Celeron Ds OC good.... Buy the INtel, get a XP90 with the money you save, and OC the puppy to 4Ghz+

Woops! Thought that was a LGA 775....

I would get a Athlon XP 2500+ Mobile as opposed to the 2800+ and some decent cooling... Course, you may have to check to see if that motherboard will support a Mobile Chip... Most of the recent BIOS' Do.

DO NOT. I reapeat DO NOT buy a socket A system.

I recently got an athlon64 3000+ and motherboard combo at frys (aka outpost.com) for $150 for my family. Its WAY more powerful than the sytem you described.

If you do for some bizzare reason buy socket A. DO NOT I repeat DO NOT buy a via chipset mainboard. Nforce2 is the only way to go.

Really, go for the athlon64 combo for $150- those two systems you described are already obsolete.

And, you can get an amd setup that will be much more powerful if you buy off the forums for $110 or so (thats what I just sold my socket a system for)

Holy crap, all I wanna know is everything good there, and is there anything I can change for the better that won't change the price all that much!

Thats what im saying, neither of those deals is great.

In the sense that they will work? sure theyre fine.
In the sense that they are good deals? No, dont buy either.

Alright, after intensive searching on newegg, I've found some....whoa...really good, cheap stuff. And AMD! YAY! (I'm doing this from Quick Reply, excuse the no-formatting)

AMD Duron 1.8 Applebred 266MHz FSB 64KB L2 Cache Socket A Processor - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819104160
$43.00

BIOSTAR M7NCD ULTRA Socket A (Socket 462) NVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400 ATX AMD Motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813138236
$52.00

gigaram 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) System Memory - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820221005
$37.50

According to my calculations... $159.50 w/o the HDD, which my friend is going to supply.

Thats a nice 2800+ 754, you could go with a 2800+ Sempron for about 80-90... or this one for 125.

Then pick a mobo.

heres what I would get...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130498

60 dollar MSI Mobo with the VIA K8T800 chipset(Not a bad chipset, to be honest)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103485

125 dollar Athlon 64 2800+, you could prolly OC it to 2.2-2.4 Ghz without a whole lot of difficulty.

Total price, before shipping and tax: 185. Total performance boost over the Celeron OR Socket A? LOTS :)

Double your Hard Drive space, for 10 dollars more?

With your PSU, it comes to about 230-240 dollars.

Not a bad deal :).

I'd work the extra couple weeks :)

Yeah, I know, but it's either, make it easier for the money (because I'm going to open a computer repair buisness for the summer), or somehow make twice the amount, or wait longer, for away more powerful system....however, I still lean toward the duron...

I wold get whats suggested above, it costs a bit more but well worth it. You will need to save your money though for your business, gotta adverise and have base money for parts.

My Two Cents Worth

I think what everyone is telling you is if your going to buy the parts it is much better to buy the parts for a current generation computer(A64 over the duron or celeron). No one has said the celeron or duron isn't a good platform).
The A64(system) is so close or just as reasonable priced as the older systems. That is why they are trying to steer you the direction they are recommending to you. It's your call but I have to agree with them.I have enough confidence in Newegg that I would buy a refurbished A64 system over their new durons or celerons.
In the computer repair business you will end up with enough durons and celeron(systems) without buying new ones.My Two Cents-Your Call - Good Luck

I definately agree with everyone else. Socket A was great in its day, but it is dated. At least get a socket 754 sempron, preferably a socket 939 a64. You wont spend that much more for them and they will be a LOT faster and you will be able to upgrade much easier afterwards (especially with the 939 sys)

Please Clearify

NsOmNiA91130 Is a 320W power supply good enough for that system?
Which system are you referring to??
Edit: Good Catch-Millhouse
Which 320 are you talking about??

That Video card also is very limiting. I have a 5200 w/ 128mb of ram, and ugh. its horrid in a gaming aspect. I'd work a few extra weeks and get a 6600 PCIe.

But then again, thats just me.

The ECS mobo will not allow you to make a decent overclock of that Celeron "D". My opinion is that you might wish to look at the P4P800-SE for oc goodness.
