:bang head * Bang Bang Bang * :bang head

Installed a 300gb SATA on to my Abit IC7.
All seemed fine.
Installed windows XP and then SP2'd it.
All seemed fine.
Installed loads of stuff over the next two weeks.
All seemed fine.
THEN... One day, XP wouldn't boot, reset it, reset it again... and it booted fine.
Same the next day...

And that's all she wrote, couldn't get the thing to boot after that!!

My thoughts, after reading on this forum / thread. I must have reached the 137gb limit and corrupted the files on my hard disk.

I have since updated my BIOS to latest version and the hard disk still wont read (but if it's corrupted then I guess you're going to get that!).

Is there a way to tell that my motherboard (with the newly updated BIOS) will now support this 300gb SATA disk???

Many thanks for ANY help... stuck on this for weeks now... so lame!!

EDIT: Since writing this, I stck my old IDE HDD (40gb) back in and it now wont even boot from that. Uber-Odd! Looking in the BIOS, It picks the HDD up as the correct size - but with the wrong number of heads, cyls etc. And what is even more strange is that if I boot of the XP install CD, I can not only see my HDD fine but it picks up the existing windows install ok. This HDD works fine in other PCs... ANY IDEAS???!!

:welcome: to the forums... and the madness ;)

Hm... is your computer overclocked? Try backing down on the OC (if there is any) and running at defaults.

Also, try resetting the CMOS via the jumper or disconnecting the battery and pulling the power cord for a minute.

What brand is your hard drive? You may want to run a diagnostic tool on it to make sure it works.

Feel free to post more questions in this thread and we'll be more than happy to help!

Hope that helps! :)

I thought when you installed SP2 it automatically took care of the 137gig limit?

Cheers, i had tried it un-oc'd, made no difference! its a maxtor disk and it checks ok, even on the machine it wont boot from.

have tried reseting bios option but will try the jumper and battery tonight!

thx

From what I've read on this forum, yeah, that would fix the windows side of things... but then you have the BIOS side of things to take into consideration. Something to do with LBA48. Please correct me if I'm wrong!! :)
