Why do so many people play World of Warcraft? I'm thinking of buying it but I can't seem to understand why people like it so much. Is it better than diablo 2?

Once you get it, you'll know! :) (So much to do so little time, at least till end game)

Hey it's Blizzard. :)
There are similarities between Diablo 2 and WoW. It would be fair to say that where Diablo 2 left off, WoW took over. Blizzard already had an immersive story line to attrack people as well as a solid base from which to build the game environment. There is so much to do in WoW because it is a MMO. With Diablo 2, it was hack/slash through the game. With WoW, its Hack/slash/raid/PvP/socialize with other people. The game doesn't come to a standstill at level 60.
New content will be released often, bringing fresh aspects to the game. All these factors add to the richness that is the WoW universe.

What other MMOG's have you played? I like the game play randomness of having other live players. The whole backstory is cool. Having a ingame war gives you something besides NPC's to fight. The economy is well done in WoW, Good solo and group content, and you have the options of PvP servers or safer PvE servers. Leveling your character is fairly fast. I'd suggest joining a guild for pointers and backup when up against the other faction.

I heard Guild Wars is going to be good. Plus it's free to play online.

I have played city of heroes and the grind in that game was so huge it wasnt even funny. :( i have guild wars but for some reason i just wanna see what all this craze about WoW is about
WoW has a ton of questing SO you rarely have to grind in game. These quests give you not only money, but items you can use or sell OR both! Plus, the pvp is awesome especially with the addition of Battlegrounds (kind of like WCIII in WoW).
Before I got WoW I thought "What's the big deal?" but I was soon changed. Honestly, WoW is my favorite MMO ever and I've played Guild Wars, Diablo II (not really an MMO), Star Wars Galaxies, Everquest, and FFXI.
If you do a search, there are tons of threads on this issue already.

People think it's good because it's easy, it's not a game designed for long term MMORPG players but for the guy who wants to try it out. You basically look at monsters and they die, then you gain levels and equipment at insane rates, all without the help of anyone. Then you go on easy raids with other players.

And its still fun! :) You must not have played that much(or if you did you didn't do alot) because there are enemies that until about Apirl or March hadn't been killed by anyone yet!

but some how it still retains the attention of the high level players. Its tons of fun

You must be one of the EQI players that think you have to shave your nuts with a cheese grader to have fun in a MMORPG.
But, hey, if clicking attack and then walking way for a 10 minute snack is your idea of fun, I guess sitting around for another 10 minutes regaining mana is twice as much fun!
Yeah, that was way over done, much like your statements, but a game doesn't have to be annoyingly incovenient to be fun. That way you get to max out more that one character rather than spending 1000+ hours getting to 65.
Fun without being a pain in the @ss... what a concept:)
ps its cool, and much better than CoH at this point, so you should try a friends free 10 day trial before you buy it. Depending on your preference you may like it better than GW or maybe not. Do the free trial.

If no one had a free trial around here, you should be able to find a free trial floating around ebay for a buck or two.

Ya we can toss around all kinds of stuff but the bottom line is that people do indeed like to become powerful as fast as possible, which seems fun for them.
I was an EQ1 player and I can't remember too many fights that were auto attack and walk away with the exception of a couple Luclin bosses. The clerics were doing all the work there.
I play EQ2 casually now and what I like about it is that I don't out-level content faster than I can play it.
In WoW I was high level before I knew it and the lower level game content isn't that fun.
I'm not interested in having 2-3 high level characters, so like I said, WoW is fun for people because it's an easy MMORPG for people who like to level fast and get satisfaction out of milestones. My EQ2 character levels at the speed I like, and I do it while playing some really cool content like the Bloodlines stuff.

Of the 30 levels I have casually played, I would say only 2 have been accomplished grinding out mobs with no story line objective. Everything else has been quests/instances. If that changes and the game get's tedious or boring, then I'll move on. So I didn't make it to 60, at least I'll have had several months of really fun gaming.
I have guild wars and play on occasion. They main draw back in the game for me is that you are forced to organize groups in cities and not out there in the countryside. Sometimes the funnest groups in WoW are just people randomly meeting while questing and making new friends.

Yeah, I was exagerating a lot (think I said so in the post).
Anyway, how is leveling in EQII vs EQ as far as time is concerned? Does it take about the same amount of time to level in both games (pre/post hell levels EQ speed)?
ps to get the free trial you need a friend with the disks. If you have a friend with disks that doesn't have a free trial left I might be able to dig mine up for you.

Now IMHO is the best time to pick up WoW. When most of the players who started on launch picked it up it was bug ridden and lag ridden, part of the reason I quit. The gameplay is amazing really amazing. THe high level content is challenging and fun, Molten Core and Onyxia are both fun. Battlegrounsd look EXTREMELY promising and the honor system is great. Even if you only get 6months out of the game how often do you get 6 straight months of playing a game and it being fun?

EQ2 has gotten easier (faster) with almost every patch nearly. Not only do they have a bonus exp system, but they have added lots of solo content and it's extremely easy to run from mobs and escape a fight.
Even with all that, I still love the 'physics' if you can call them that and the pace. You never sit and meditate, the fights are fast paced, and the rewards are pretty decent but nothing that will create all powerful chracters because you will eventually out-level your gear and be migrating to a new 'sword of owning' when you get the chance.
Beyond the gameplay +'s for me are the graphics, WoW is very well done and very stylish but lacks a richness that draws me personally in. Problem is that you need a monster of a machine to run it well. WoW will run on just about everything which is another reason people like it.
