View Full Version : My one Newegg complaint...shipping prices

I am a big champion of Newegg, and I buy most of my computer stuff there, but unfortunately, the sometimes wacky shipping charges frequently make it a poor decision to buy some things, especially smaller, inexpensive items.
As an example, take a look at these RJ-45 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16831008003) female connectors. The price isn't too bad at 2.99 each, and I would be willing to pay that amount. However, the shipping charge is $4.99. I do a lot of shipping as well, so I know that is about right for shipping for one pound, and even though a connector doesn't weigh a full pound, that is the minimum weight for Fed Ex. Where the problem lies is that I then say to myself "Well, ok, I will just buy ten or twenty of them", and I know that ten or twenty of these connectors still do not weigh over one pound. In my opinion, these should all be combined, and the shipping should be based on weight, as it is with fed ex or UPS. Unfortunately, even though I get a discount on shipping if I buy 10 of them or more, the shipping is still too much. Sure, the shipping goes down to $1 each, but that means $20 in shipping for something that should only cost as much to ship as one of the same item costs to ship. I could maybe understand if we were talking about not combining items for shipping because they were a bunch of different things, but in a case like my example, it is only the difference between grabbing 10 or 20 of these out of the RJ-45 bin instead of just grabbing 1 out of the bin and tossing it into a box.
Anyhow, that is my only real complaint with Newegg...they make it hard for me to justify buying EVERYTHING from them heh.

Most everything else has really low shipping, if not free. Its the small stuff that always kills.

We agree that shipping pricing can become frustrating sometimes, especially with the smaller items. Please note that not all items are shipped from the same location. This is why Newegg charges shipping per item, and not per package. This is an area that we do need to improve in, and rest assured we have been discussing way to provide a better shipping cost to our customers. If at any time you want to order some items, but the shipping price is keeping you from ordering; let us know and we will be happy to offer a reasonable discount. Feel free to contact me here, or call me at 800-390-1119 ext 2050.
Thank You,

It's just the way Fed Ex is. Fed Ex isn't good for shipping packages <1 pound. A couple of months ago I shipped a processor via Fed Ex express saver to CA. It cost me $12.39. (the box only had two sheets of bubble wrap and the processor in the plastic case). I was bummed out about it, but I had already agreed to ship it that way with the buyer. So newegg is actually cutting you a deal. :)
I wouldn't say newegg is cutting you a deal, they just get a better shipping rate from FEDEX b/c they ship so much stuff so they probably ship at cost for most stuff. When they used to offer free shipping on a lot of items that was a deal. I haven't seen Free shipping on anything on newegg in a while.
Shipping via FEDEX from the east coast or south to CA costs more than shipping to most other parts of the country I guess b/c of fuel and traffic and stuff. When ppl. are sick or on vacation I have to help with shipping at work and I've seen a $3~5 difference on the same package, same shipping method, different place with FEDEX.

There's tons of items on Newegg currently with Free Shipping. You just need to look around some more.
Seems like newegg has been working on their shipping prices the past few months because for a while it seems like everything was shipping for $5+. It still seems like there used to be a lot more with free shipping on newegg a year or two ago, but maybe that's just me.

Newegg shipping is fine, especially for us in California, I dont mine paying 3.99 for 2-3 day which arrives overnight every single time, but I agree on the fact that it is a pain in the ass when you order something that is at a lower price range, and than they crank the shipping up to more than the actual product cost. But at least your not forced to have a 10.00 minimum cart balance than be charged with shipping like directron.

Trust me, I know all about shipping with Fed Ex hehe. My company just recently switched over to Fed Ex as our preferred shipper, so I have to send everything through them now.
My complaint isn't that it costs $5 to ship 1 patch cable that weighs less than a pound to me here in Oregon. My complaint is that if I instead order 20 patch cables that weigh a pound, it should still cost that $5 to ship to me. Fed Ex you have to do a minimum of a pound for shipping, and if I remember correctly, at least for my company, that is about $5. As long as the weight is a single pound or less, it should not cost any more to ship 20 of the same thing to me than it would to send the single one. That is all I am trying to say. If things came from different areas, or maybe even different items altogether then I can understand it more, but when they are all identical items then it makes no sense.
Also, I read your reply Newegg Support, and thank you for the response! The next time I need to make a purchase along those lines I will certainly call in. Thanks again;.
