I just got my AMD Athlon 1.4Ghz 266 Ayhja by mail today and by the looks of it, its unlocked... All the L1 bridges are connected so this means its unlocked right? As you can see by my sig i have a PIII 1Ghz so im kind of unfamiliar with AMD processors. Can someone back me up on this? Do they all come like this?

Usually the procs 1.2GHz & above with a 266FSB are unlocked & their 200FSB counterparts are locked. I remember someone saying that the 200FSB chips have more multipliers than the 266FSBs. Can anyone confirm this?

The bios of your mobo determines how many multipliers you have to select from. You do need more multiplier support to run a 200 fsb chip. On a 1.4, your multiplier has to be 14 but with a 266 fsb chip it only needs to be 10.5.

So if you are going to buy a high MHz chip that runs at 100 MHz fsb you need to make sure that your bios has the correct multiplier options. Many mobo companies have released bios upgrades. So many boards that did not intially support them now do with an upgrade.

My 1.2Gig Athlon BXIA(200fsb) came unlocked. I can notice it on the small L2? pins.

Maybe AMD started doing this for compatibility with different mobo, or maybe the shop did this?

You check if the CPU is unlocked by looking on the L1 bridges located on top of the chip, if they're not cut then your CPU is unlocked...
