My dad's getting into some Internet business, so I'm wondering; what kind of a security would he need?
Well what kind of internet business? Is he going to be hosting a site out of your home, an office, or something else? We need some details of what he has in mind.

It's out of an office. And.. yeah... I don't know what details more are needed, but please feel free to ask, as I can always use some help on this matter.

Well what does he plan on doing? Does he plan on hosting a website, a mailserver, a game server? Or just simply is going to be using a few computers in an office building?

If he is having people purchase goods online.. a secure connection (ssl) is a must. It gives the end user some trust in ensuring they're credit cards wont get intercepted.
You could always use a 3rd party solution like paypal shopping cart, but with this you are limiting your customers. I would try and find the most widespread, and user option friendly source for making payments. (if you have to, include multiple ways).

What steps must be taken to get this SSL connection? And what additional things can one do? My thanks in advance.

ssl isjust options on the webserver and the pages / scripts run on the server.
i believe ssl is a module for apache, and i dunno about IIS or other webservers.
so this business will be a web based sales being hosted out of home?
might wanna be sure your current connection's TOS allows for hosting to be done from the connection.

The best thing to offer is to research over on sans.org's reading room. Also it might be wise to hire a security consultant for a brief time to help get things organized.
