View Full Version : USB drivers?
Alright, here's what I did:
I re-installed windows 95 on my old machine.
Now, after I did this...I look in the device manager...And suddenly it doesn't know about its' own USB ports. This is an old machine, a Gateway LP Mini-Desktop this is all I can find on it (http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/INTEL/SAC057AA/MC057ATC.shtml), does anyone have any idea where I can get the drivers? Any disks for this computer are long gone...Thanks,
-Barret

You need OS service release 2.1 or greater to support USB on Win95.
I would start HERE (http://www.usbman.com/Win95%20USB%20Guide.htm) and follow the steps to get the correct drivers and updates installed.
Heh, thats awesome, thanks! Now I just need to spend the next few hours looking for my motherboard specific chipset drivers....If I can't, I'll have to see if Gateway still has them somewhere....I doubt that...But at least I'm that much closer :)

Glad to help. Shouldn't take you hours. Go to THIS (http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/dlcenter.asp) page to determine where your serial number is located. Then enter the serial number, and you should be able to download everything you need.
I've tried that. The thing hates my serial number, which is clearly printed on the back of my computer. The gateway folks over at gateway.com want nothing to do with me, because my computer was manufactured in Ireland. The UK website (closest I can get) isnt any help. I guess I'm screwed?
You know what it might be? I might have used the wrong disk to install windows. That would explain alot...I'm going to go look for another, I know they're around here somewhere!
EDIT: Nope, it says right on the disk that I used.."With USB support"...
EDIT: I found this new information:
Procedure B: Installing PIIX4 drivers and the USB supplement
1. Click on each subentry of the Other devices category once to highlight it, and then click on the Remove button at the bottom of the System Properties window.
2. Click OK to confirm the device removal. If Windows asks you to restart do not allow it to restart.
3. Insert your Gateway System CD, and wait approximately fifteen seconds for it to automatically run. The Configuration Tool window will appear.
4. Close the configuration tool window.
5. Double click on the My Computer icon. You may have to minimise or move some windows around to see this desktop icon (it’s in the top left corner of the screen).
6. Right-click on the System CD icon (it will have the icon of a Gateway box).
7. Left-click on Explore from the pop-up menu.
8. In the Exploring window that opens, double click on the Win95 folder on the right.
9. Next, double click on the PIIX4 folder. There will be a number of files inside this folder.
10. Double click on Update. A black window will appear and quickly disappear on screen. This is normal.
11. Once the black window disappears, double click on Usbupd. The same thing will occur again.
12. Close the Exploring window.
13. Change back to the System Properties window.
14. Click on the plus sign to the left of System devices.
15. Click once on the PCI bus subentry to highlight it.
16. Click Remove at the bottom of the window.
17. Click OK to confirm device removal.
18. Click No at the System Settings Change window – we do not want Windows to restart the computer yet.
19. Swap the Gateway System CD and insert your Microsoft Windows 95 CD. Again wait approximately fifteen seconds for the CD to automatically start.
20. Close all of the windows that are currently open.
21. Again, double click on the My Computer icon.
22. Right-click on the Windows 95 CD icon.
23. Left-click on Explore from the pop-up menu.
24. In the Exploring window that opens, double click on the Other folder on the right.
25. Next, double click on the USB folder. There will be three files inside this folder.
26. Double click on Usbsupp to start the installation of the USB supplement.
27. Click Yes to install the Microsoft USB Supplement.
28. Click Yes again if you agree to the terms having read the license agreement. Scandisk will run.
29. When the installation is finished click OK to restart your computer. As the computer restarts, Windows 95 will detect and install a number of hardware devices. For any Add New Hardware Wizard that appears, click Next to let Windows search for a driver, and if Windows asks you to restart to finish setting up new hardware, say Yes. It will find the driver in all cases but one. Usually, installation pauses when Windows cannot find a file called UHCD.SYS.
30. Click inside the Copy files from box, and delete whatever is there.
31. Type “c:\windows\system” (without the quotation marks) and click on OK. Windows will find the file in this folder and continue to reload the hardware.
32. Once you get back to the Windows desktop, the PIIX4 and USB installation is complete.
I didn't know that you needed drivers for usb ports. I hook up my digital camera and flash drive, and haven't used a driver once. Maybe it is just Win 95
lol, Yeh me either, i suggest you get win-2k. ;)
