i want to expand my home entertainment system by getting rid of my tv and putting in a projector with a slidedown screen and hookup all my systems to it. (also doing those to open up some room). right now my room is a pretty good sized rectangular area to practice on (i breakdance) and id love to move the bulky stuff like the tv out.

Keep an eye on woot.com, they usually have a good deal on a projector every now and then.

Build your own.

Otherwise you will get killed with replacement bulb costs.

You CAN build your own, and they are of equal or better quality than purchased projectors at a fraction of the cost. However there is a lot of work involved, and they aren't exactly the nicest looking things (think large wooden box).

Bulb replacement on a store-bought projector can be as high as $600, while the replacement bulbs for a DIY would be under $30 and last much longer. That Tom's Hardware Guide is the WRONG way to build a projector.

If you're interested, I suggest you check out http://www.lumenlab.com

Nothing if you don't care about picture quality and you want something fast and relatively easy. Those kinds of overhead projectors are not the ideal lighting solution, an enclosure with a proper lamp and lenses, is going to provide MANY more times the lighting power and a cleaner, brighter picture.

What an awesome deal! I just sold my X1 to pay for my new 4805 and got more than that for it!

The 4800 and 4805 are great projectors. You haven't seen anything until you run an HD signal through them!

Depends on the projector. Some you have to replace just the bulb, others the whole lamp itself. I bought a refurbed InFocus 4800 DLP from www.woot.com to try out for myself and/or sell to someone, so I'll try to remember to give you guys my impressions. It was $500.

You're not going to get 15 years out of a bulb.

DIY is the way to go. Especially if you're an overclocker, it's in your blood. You can get a much brighter and bigger picture with a DIY. Tomshardware has a good guide for beginners, then if you're feeling ambitious you can disect your projector and put it in a box. You can also combine a DIY projo w/ a mini pc for an awesome lan box.

yeah i need compact, portable, and good looking.

And im pretty sure lamp/bulb is the same thing, the bulbs are covered in a metal sheild so when/if the explode they dont hurt the projector, and yes some explode when they burn out!

Im not going to get 15 years, i want till the end of high school or the end of college, and i can buy a replacement lamp if i have to (2-6 years(
