My computer is a client on a small network over which I share the internet with my friend. Everything works fine as long as both computers on the network use win98. But for some reason I can't access the internet if I'm on xp and the server computer's on 98.

I've tried using the internet connection wizard with no success. I can see his computer fine over the network, and everything else is fine...just no internet.

Just so you'll know the setup:

cable modem connects to friends computer...2nd network card from his computer goes to hub...My computer plugs into hub.
We use the Sygate networking program. Like I said, this all works fine with 98, but I need it to work for XP.

thanks in advance

Hmm.... my guess would have to be that somehow XP isn't picking up the proxy settings. I would enter them manually on the XP machine.

I'm not using a proxy server. I have entered the ip address manually, and that's what I have to do in order to see other computers on the network. But it still won't connect to the web!?

The same setup works perfect with 98.
Is there a special option in xp that I don't know about?

I just want to connect to the internet!!

Run the connection the other way if that's possible. Dual network cards and the modem on the XP box, run Internet Connection Sharing instead of Sygate. Should work. Also, you may run the 'Network Setup Wizard' on your XP box and create the disk for the 98 box to configure it. Otherwise, just buy a router, CompUSSR has the SMCs on special for 50 bucks after rebate.
Peace

Actually, I figured it out...

The server computer's version of sygate was not the latest xp compatible version. Upgraded it and everything works grreat.

once again, it always seems to be something simple:rolleyes:
