Welcome to the folding team, got any questions someone will surely answer them. Also clean out your rig becuase you will want to get rid of as much heat as possible for folding as it pushes your rig pretty hard. Looked like it was pretty dusty especially that up close MOBO picture. Good luck.

Venom I love it! Nice NB cooler too.
I think its that Zalman NB cooler. That thing doubles as a very good CPU heatsink for EPIA boards ;)

Ven0m
06-15-05, 05:27 PM
Yes, that's blue Zalman on my previous mobo (A7V333).
Just now I've got A7V880 with stock ASUS sink, which I find superior to Zalman. That Zalman is just too restrictive for being passive, but it looks cool.
There's also fan blowing at NB sink at RAM. I still use that bracket holding Ge4 and Audigy2 ZS in place. It works pretty well. A small fact on PSU that you can see on photo - it's some no-name 190W, but was able to hold my computer before upgrade (also folding a lot):
- Palomino 1800+ 1533@1860, 2.2v
- GeForce 4 Ti 4200 250/446 @ 310/567
- Hitachi 60Gb HDD, 7200RPM
- DVD-ROM
- CD-RW Burner
And voltages weren't bad, but Ithought it's a bit risky, so I got something better.

I think that folding rig should be silent, not to provoke owner to turn it off :D CPU fan runs 1700-1800RPM, depending on temperature, NB/RAM fan stays <1400RPM - both are AC fan 3 TC, of which one is modded. I've also got my shiny PSU back. Too bad I can't get camera. I intended to put computer back in case, but I have to rethink it again. I've got custom 160cm long desk, so computer sitting on it isn't a problem. To put it in case or not...

Try placing cd's or dvd's COVERs under each post of the laptop I have four cd covers under each of the four sides and it helps to keep it cooler. Make sure the cd's or whatever you use are not under the laptop besides the four feet. It will let your cpu fan be unrestricted. Also blow out the dust by blowing compressed air through the EXHAUST not the intake. That will clog it more if the dust is too big. If you're comfortable with taking things apart put some AS5 on that puppy also clean it that way to get as much dust as possible. Good luck with folding on that lappy

PS are you talking about the north bridge or notebook? :p

Wow you have a little problem there.I suggest a side intake fan like 90 or 100mm blowing right into the center of the case.
I see you have only one mounting hole for the NB sink.Am I correct? If you have the standard two holes My cooler I showed you in your other thread will fit fine and solve the NB heat problem but you should still add a side intake.

freeagent
06-17-05, 08:59 AM
hey another noisy jet 7 owner heheh, may i ask why you have your intake faceing down? and, if you want more revs, and to get rid of that awful whistle for the most part, take the blower off, clean your fins, cuz of the blower stuff just gets packed on top of the fins, if you look up you can see my ghetto mod, adding that cpu fan sure made a difference, with noise and performance :) so did lapping...

Here is my setup, only one computer, I have a laptop, but I stopped folding with it after the second time it stopped booting and I had to send it back for rma . I also have one or two systems folding away at my dads office(but they are ooold). Unfortunately the Bruce&funnyperson1alliance is no longer much of an alliance especially since Bruce stopped folding years ago and my dad seems to not have a need for the machines I build so they sit in his office gathering dust, so the brunt of my work units are shouldered by what you see here:

as some of you may have seen in the cooling section, ive been busy working on my "upstairs" FOLDing rig, trying to quiet it down. i picked up a XP-90 and
3x Panaflow 92MM
Model: FBA09A12H1BX
Air Flow: 57 CFM
Fan Speed: 2850 RPM
Noise Level: 35 dBA
fans to replace the TT HSF and SmartfanII and an areo cool "HIGH" 80mm (DONT use these they are WAY too loud for the air they move!!)

i had to do some case mods and prove a point but i jacked Consumer9000's thread (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=393525&page=1) :( since it IS a FOLDing rig...ill repost/edit HERE ;)

i have SOOOOOOOOO many pics ill test your bandwidth ;)
EDIT: imageshack even seems to be having problems...6/20
2nd: no imageshack home page...back up...

Joe Camel

Fly-cutting does leave tool marks, and these marks are often of significant magnitude due to higher-than-advisable feed rates and/or worn tooling. This does not produce a concave surface, but degrades the surface finish. Removing these surface irregularities does often help performance, but most users using what comes to hand will make the surface in question less flat.

this is how i hold the HSF... thumb and middle finger on the points where the spring clips are attached to the HSF. this is the ideal place to hold as it is the ACTUAL points where the HSF will get pressure when installed AND gives a MUCH lower point of gravity (compared to holding on the top of the fins) which reduces the tendency to tip the block.

http://img54.echo.cx/img54/2615/pict00863hj.jpg

this is where i lap: sandpaper taped to a mirror on a table in the garage. just an average user, using what "comes to hand"...

http://img54.echo.cx/img54/8387/pict00878yp.jpg

this is about 15-20 min worth of lapping (i was taking my time and used 400 grit to start)

note the inconsistent pattern on corner closest to the bottom... this pattern started from the first pass and i was VERY careful to put even pressure on the block, in fact for a few passes, i over compensated and had 75% pressure on the "other" side (the "other" side was the side my thumb was on...it is quite easy to push harder with your thumb) but the pattern did not change.

http://img54.echo.cx/img54/8608/pict00894vu.jpg

this is a pic of the block in the same state as the above shot (no more lapping was done) but i played around with the reflection so as to be able to see the pure copper / partially removed nickel / and the low spot where the nickel plating was barley touched.

http://img54.echo.cx/img54/6199/pict00880lp.jpg

here is a pic of the block almost finished...

NOTE: this is a PERFECT picture to show how/where hand lapping falls short!!

you can quite obviously see the edge (and corners) of the block IS getting sanded away MUCH MORE than the rest of the block (the leading edge getting the most of the friction) BUT also please note that this only effects about 1/16" in from the edge!! since the CPU is nowhere close to that...WHO CARES!!?

EDIT: after lapping CPU ... i can now tell you that a MAIN reason for this is un-flat/loose paper, as a "wave" of paper is being pushed ahead of the block. i "low grit" the CPU with taped paper and had very little "leading edge" effect/markings. then i put the 1500 grit on top of the 600 without taping/replacing (I got LAZY!!! i was so sick of lapping @ that point) and i got a BAD/excessive amount as you'll see later...in post 69)

http://img54.echo.cx/img54/9221/pict00927pb.jpg

15 min of slow / light / 1 direction 1500 grit

http://img54.echo.cx/img54/5479/pict00936ni.jpg

not a bad lap job (IMHO)

i was SOOO close to getting the CPU and HSF to WRING ** together (http://www.dcr.net/~stickmak/JOHT/joht18measure.htm), there was a strong attraction, but it was not enough to hold the weight of the CPU. (if i were to lap the CPU down to pure copper, im sure i could wring them together but im SOOO sick of lapping @ this point!)

** wring:
To measure with a gauge block you simply select a combination of blocks (using the fewest in combination you can, in a process called stacking) which adds up to the length you want, "wring" the blocks by rubbing the appropriate ends against each other to squeeze the air out from between them, and compare the length to the target. One interesting feature of gauge blocks is that the surfaces are so smooth and flat that once they are mated in this way they stay together unless considerable effort is used to part them. The combination of the adhesive action of the ultra-thin film of preservative oil or moisture on the blocks and the molecular attraction, or bonding, between the very flat and parallel mating surfaces, will actually hold them together.

hard to say...with not only the HSF change but the case fan change, temp comparisons are really impossible (and i NEVER installed the XP-90 in its "stock" form)

i CAN say that the Rig is WAY quieter than it was B4, but the temps have not really changed. (NOTE: this is after 8 hours of TIM set-in but only 2 hours on and maybe 2 "cycles"... i HAD to SLEEP!!

o ya, i was having problems booting with the VX mem i had in, so i (just for fun) through in my new Mushkin RedLines to see if they (also UTT) would boot (with the VX in, i needed to reset CMOS for 3+ hours B4 i could get a boot...NOT worth it!!)

huh, i was @ (HIGHEST stable HTT i could reach with any mem tried: UTT & BH-5 but NOT the RedLines)
233x10 (2-2-2-6) FOLDing away for 5 days or so (36C-38C, 1.5Vcore)

and now im @...
250x10 (2.5-2-2-5) FOLDing away for 3 hours now (42C now 1.65Vcore)

Mushkin RedLines make any rig FLY!!!

this is a really strange MSI K8T Neo2-F (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1173596&CatId=1569) with lots of MEM issues, like the VX is the ONLY mem that would boot & not freeze/revert back to 2.5 with cas 2 settings (in BIOS or A64Tweaker)

http://img215.echo.cx/img215/4513/pict01326sa.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)

what REALLY SUCKS about this mobo/HSF combo is:
the ONLY way to get dual channel mem and use the DDR booster is to have the booster in the slot closest to the CPU...with the XP-90's "over-hang" it makes installing it (the over-hang) over the mem (which would be PERFECT to cool the mem/booster) IMPOSSIBLE

and the back complete with "out of case" 92mm case fan mod and cat proofing (i have a cat the chews wires)

another mod in this SUPER FOLDing rig upgrade...;)

POSTED on 6/7/05:

i started playing with a (cheep-o) MSI K8T (VIA chipset) Neo2-F mobo a few days ago.

after i got it up and running, i like to through in different kinds of RAM to see what works "well"...

this mobo likes UTT and BH-5 BUT the VDIMM goes to 2.85....

time to break out the ol' Booster but the HS (gen 1 with 3 HS) on the thing have been removed/moved soooo many times to fit in a few different mobo's, i couldnt use them any more...

well, i found some OCZ BGA HS (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1283741&CatId=496) laying around and got to work

these things are the PERFECT HS for the Booster!!

as with most mobo's, there are a few caps in the way of the Booster's HS and the fins of the BGA HS can be easily bent (small screwdriver is all you need) to make room for them. (o ya, and they are made of COPPER)

here are a few pics:

http://img113.echo.cx/img113/4282/pict00564in.jpg

http://img113.echo.cx/img113/6509/pict00551kk.jpg

NOTE: the old HSF & VX in this shot

http://img113.echo.cx/img113/9818/pict00483bd.jpg

since the DFI mobo's have this "5V VDIMM problem", there are going to be a few old Boosters put back into use and i thought this might help...does the DFI have caps in the way?

PS @ first (old HS) i was having the voltage (booster readout) +/- .2V  but with these new HS on, 0 (yes zero) +/- :attn:

edit: the old HS were so bad, i almost burnt my finger on a little part of the MOSFET sticking out.

JoeCamel - Those pics are awsome. I think you may have gotten close to mill spec on that HS and CPU Spreader. If we could mill these things flat, the two parts would literally stitck together with no need for HSC/AS5.

No pictures of my office, but finally got some pages of the rigs up, enjoy, :G

Ok guys update, I have been living in this subleased apartment for summer school for a couple more weeks and my room has changed a bit, in a word....dirty. But there is more interesting stuff!

One thing, I went to a Virginia Tech surplus auction and ended up getting a couple monitors. One is a great Gateway VX900/Hitachi CM715 19" monitor and the other is an Apple Studio CRT Monitor which apparently is useless to me because it uses an Analog ADC connection which AFAIK has no workable converter, but I got it for 10 bucks and will probably Ebay it.

Also note that the old IBM Model M is back in its rightful place, man I love the buckling springs.

Here are a lot of shots taken from my cell:

Overall Desk:
http://filebox.vt.edu/users/asohangh/images/SPA0025s.jpg
Computer setup:
http://filebox.vt.edu/users/asohangh/images/SPA0026s.jpg
My Compaq X1000 laptop:
http://filebox.vt.edu/users/asohangh/images/SPA0027s.jpg
Apple Studio Monitor and Samsung 17" LCD.
http://filebox.vt.edu/users/asohangh/images/SPA0028s.jpg

It's funny because I am in a dilemma, my LCD which cost almost $300 a year ago is great (unfortunately it has a VGA connection), but the $20 19" Gateway has great image quality, and 1600x1200 at 75Hz is absolutely beautiful. I would dual monitor it up but, I know my dorm next year won't have nearly enough space for that. I may end up using the LCD if only for space concerns :(.

I don't get it... is the Audigy not good? I think it's nice, using the digital coax out is great.

I'm fully satisfed with my Audigy 2 ZS, even when using HiFI headphones. And Platinum is even better. Perhaps there are better stereo cards, but difference will be hard to hear. Audigis are the best surround sound cards.

The Audigy cards are great for surround sound and gaming, but with your high end speaker setup there are certainly better sound cards available for quality stereo sound and music playback. That was what stratcat was trying to say.

Update: The Black 4U has 2 700series protiens and is only making 266PPD overall. Did I mention that I FREAKIN' HATE 700's!!!! :temper:

It's okay, I don't think you were. I looked into other cards, and got a Creative E-MU 1212m and used the balanced interconnects to my Alesis RA150 amp. It is much better than the Audigy, I would have got this in the first place, I just dide'nt know there was anything else. :)

Thanks for the advice.
