Hey everybody. This is my first post here, and I wish I didn't have to make it this one. I just purchased a 1.4 GHZ Tbird (EYHJA) and an ABIT KT7A mobo. I was building everything tonight when the machine wouldn't post. So after pulling all the cards out, trying only one memory stick etc nothing worked I pulled out the chip. I have a Thermaltake 6cu+ and ASII on the chip. I removed the HSF and through the AS I could see a chip in the bottom left-hand corner. It looks like a broken shard of glass. So I don't know if this is what's causing the problem (the chip is totally done) or it's something un-related. I was trying to get opinions on whether I should give up and buy a new chip or if this could be repaired. There are no cracks through the core or anything, it just looks like the point on the corner was broken. Any opinons would be greatly appreciated! :) .. Here's the full specs

ABIT KT7A
1.4 Tbird EYHJA -- Thermaltake 6Cu+ & ASII
Deer case w/ 300w PS
2 x Crucial 256 PC133
IBM Deskstar 7200 ATA66 20GB
Matrox G400 Dual-Head (32mb) -- Needs to be upgraded
Sound Blaster Live! Value
3Com 10/100 PCI Etherfast Card
CDRW & DVD-ROM Drives

I tried cleaning off the chip and re-installing to still no POST. Don't know if any of that helped if the chip wasn't at fault, but thought I'd throw it in. Hopefully I can get this all resolved and reporting what this chip can run at soon! Thanks in advance!

i have heard of chips being busted with just a little chip on them....thus starts the shim vs. no shim argument. if it is still under warranty...take advantage of that.

Do you have a friend that could test the cpu for you or even a store that sells pc part(or repairs them).

Did you try starting the system with only the basics (mobo, floppy, video, cpu and only one stick of ram)
Try that, if it boots turn it off and add stuff your other hardare piece by piece.

Also did you ever had this system running before or is it a no boot since the starting?

Hope this will help you solve your problem:)

Thanks for the reply guys! Well it is under warranty, but I don't know how it worked. Ordered online and got a 1 yr warranty on a OEM chip because I bought a HSF w/ it. So maybe it got damaged in shipping ;).

The system has yet to POST since I put it together. I tried removing everything but the video card but have yet to get a beep or a video signal. Just one stick and video card didn't work so I figured I'd pop off the chip and see if it wasn't flush or something. Well that's when I discovered the problem. I don't know if this caused all the problems, or if it's unrelated. I don't have another video card laying around to test and I don't think I can get to a PC shop till Monday. It's off to Disney this weekend where I can stand in lines and stew over this  . Anyway, I appreciate the quick replies and the input. If anyone else has cracked the core and still had it work please let me know, as it would be much appreciated along with any other ideas. Thanks again!

it's the processor, man. i had that yesterday with a duron 750. i didn't chip it, but got the same symptoms as you. no post. the fans all power on, but no vid signal or boot. i took the processor back, and got another, and now everything's cool.

It sure is that processor. I have chipped two AMD's now in the last few days one 1.4 and one 1ghz. The 1ghz wont work at all but the 1.4 works but wont do a single mhz higher than 1.4.

Try unhooking everything, even the video card and let only the pcspeaker be hooked on. If you dont get a beep then the mobo is dead.

I ran my chipped 1.2gig T-Bird for month's with the corner crushed. Ran great with Radio shack thermal paste. Decided to go to ASII. Worked pretty good but got a little careless I think. Must have gotten some in the crushed area of the core. Never worked again.

Well have fun trying to return that........Same thing happened to me after only a week of owning it. They refused to replace it because they said it was "overclocked" which is a crock of sh*t.

So after a month of arguing they still wouldn't gimme a new chip so I had to go buy one.

My 1000 Mhz @ 1200 Mhz is running just great w/ a chipped corner. I guess I just got lucky. The Overclocking Kami were shining down on me that day . . . ^_^

I have an old 1.1Ghz AFJA thats chipped. I've had it running for over 9 months now. Pretty good overall. It REALLY doesnt like overclocking though. Can only hit 1177Mhz stable with the chipped core.

hey Bmxpunk86pl you will have to give us alittle bit more information than that, first your mobo, video card, cpu,ram and does anything happen when you try to turn on your computer(fans turn, lights turn on, etc...).
the only suggestion i can give to you with the information handed would be to check all your cables.:(
but with more information maybe we could find the problem;)

This is why you should always do research on a reseller before buying. I never buy from any reseller with a rating lower than 6 at www.resellerratings.com and I've never had a problem with any RMA.

Hope you get them to take it back.

Hey everybody thanks for replying! I apologize for taking so long to reply again with updates (like anyone cares), but I was pseudo-away for the weekend.

First of all el you rock :D. That made me lol

Hugo: Thanks for the link, teaches me a lesson :).

Everyone else: Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it.

And now for what's going on. Well, I took the computer over to a local computer shop to hook it up to a bench. The chip posted in another computer, but I was given the advice "Well it posted, but I doubt it'll load Windows", something that is still yet to be tested by me. So then I got to wondering why not in my mobo. So I hooked the mobo up with the essentials out of the case, and low and behold it posted. So now I'm totally confused. So, I take it home and get it to post with only a video card, two sticks of 256 pc133, my g400 video card, 6Cu+ and 1 case fan. The hard drive and CDRW on on the same IDE cable into the IDE1 controller on the mobo. It posts and gives me a error loading os error (which is fine because the drive is formatted). So now I'm thinking I'm set so I hook up the DVD drive to the second ide controller and nothing. I figure it's a fluke and take out the dvd but plug in my network card. Now here's where it get's funny (wasn't for me at the time though)- if I change a single thing (even move my thermaltake fan from the FAN2 to FAN1 header) it won't post. I install a card- it won't post. I look at it funny (as long as I change the original settings) and no post. I tried clearing the CMOS jumper and it didn't help. So now I'm wondering if my Deer 300W PS isn't enough to even make it post, or if my box is possessed. I apologize for the long post, but if anyone can help me, please please do. I'm starting to throw things, because I'm just so damn frustrated with this machine. Once again, thanks for the suggestions and input from everyone, it's much appreciated. Also, thanks to everyone who posted stories of their cracked chips still working, it gives me some hope! Hope everyone had a great weekend, and isn't having the kind of troubles I am ;) !
