hey all.
we've got a safecom adsl router, hub, print server thingy at home, and my brothers being an idiot and has only limited my internet to 1 hour a day, this is NOT enough, and reasoning with him does not work.
i've got a feeling that the router 'recognizes' my computer by either ip address, name or mac address.ive got 3 network cards at my disposal, plus one onboard one, is there anyway that i can change the mac address 'on the fly' so that the router does not recognize me and just let me connect up to the net?
thank you

MAC Addresses on each NIC(Network interface card) are permanent. You cannot change them. The only MAC addresses that i believe you can change are modems.
How does he limit the time ? Is it a router function? If so, router is it?

i would install one of the new NIC's and see if the router will let you on the network and get to the internet. and plus that sucks really bad that hes doin that.

What about restarting the router occasionally if your really desperate?

Give it a go,
http://www.securiteam.com/tools/6H00T006AK.html (http://)

ive used such a tool when i was a student cuz we had wireless network and only library laptops that u could hired from desk could connect to the router as the access was based on MAC address. was workin fine

hope it helps

hey
thanx, restarting the router would work, except that it wipes all other settings, including internet settings and print server settings, then id have to completely reconfigure the router! that just takes a while, plus i dont have the new internet settings.
thanx.
and yah, it does suck that hes doing that. o well!

An easy way is it to just save the settings (usually it saves as a .bin file) and then reset...once your done, just load the settigns again :)
try that.

That defeats the purpose of resetting the router doesn't it?

Go take the CPU out of his computer, and demand that he take your internet time limit away or else.

Take a picture of you holding a large hammer over the cpu, or have it in front of a car tire. Then go put the pictures in his room while hes not there. Leave a little note saying what you want.

NOTE: This should only be used as a last measure, try the other stuff first.

If he does that he will probably get 0 interenet time. :-/

Oh well, then he can smash the CPU with a hammer, or better yet find another computer with internet access and sell his brothers stuff on ebay.

you could just go before the router, as in buy a hub and split the connection before the wire reaches the router

Who pays the bills? If it is your brother then tuff luck. If it is your Dad then go to him and have him resolve the issue you are having with your brother.

Wrong. Any MAC address is changeable. Under Linux it's a standard ifconfig feature. Under Windows, the driver has to allow it, but not all drivers do. Intel drivers usually do for example.

As for changing the MAC to some other value to bypass the restriction: if his brother is smart, it won't work. Either he just set one MAC to be only allowed 1 hour/day or he only allowed certain MACs to connect at all and among those MACs the specific one to 1hour/day. If it is the 2nd case, then you need to clone your brother's MAC (since presumably he set it so that he himself can always connect to the internet). So your best bet is to find out your brother's MAC and then clone it.

na the MACs are burnt onto your card.

it is actually my brother who pays the bill......damnit.
so is there no way at all to change the mac address? i think i've figured out how it works, basically, he's set diff rules for a mac address, so at such and such a time the net is open, and at others it isnt, also, so is there no way to change mac address? id be ok with popping another hdd in and running linux if that lets me get around the 'system'.
heh, i'd have to get into his case before i could get to his cpu, and id also have to try that after he'd beat the crap outta me! lol. yup. but yeh, o well.
thanx anyhoo!

That doesn't mean you can't change it while it's running: http://www.nthelp.com/NT6/change_mac_w2k.htm

You can snoop his MAC address with ethereal or any other good packet sniffer. Or go to his computer and run "ipconfig /all" in a DOS box

hey all.
ha, success! lol, he logged into the console on my pc, and didnt log out, so i changed the rules.
ok, its not anything to do with MAC addresses! sorry, its 'packet filters'.
anyway at all to get around this?!
thanx

why not just offer to split the bill with him?

bixit_62

heh. my brothers clever. very clever, (5A*4A's2B's at GCSE and 5 A levels, in all 3 sciences, maths and further maths, getting the highest that king edwards had seen in 30years) so he then knows, that if i split the bill with him, which im more than happy to do, then he HAS to put the net on for me, seeing as im paying for half of the net, that would also mean that i wouldnt exactly agree with him torrenting as at times it would slow down MY connection, and so he would have to turn it off. nope. sadly, im stuck with whatever gets given my way!
i also think its something to do with IP address, as in the packet filter menu, was my IP address, and next to it were the 'rule selector' a drop down menu where you could select each rule.
thanx.

set a static IP, the same as your brother's PC. hwoever: as soon as he wants to use his PC at the same time, there will be a clash.

the router assigns ip's tho, if i set my own, will it bypass the router?
thanx.

Why not just get your own seperate connection?

If it's DSL, the local CO here will send another modem+assign an IP for $10 more a month.

Cable, you can have a second one wired to your house. I'm assuming if you can afford half the internet bill, the other half shouldnt be too bad

if only it was that simple.....nope, was hard enough getting dad to let us install a new line so that we could get 4mb, ANOTHER line would be waaay over the top, and then my brother would stick his oar in and say theres no need!
thanx all anyhoo! the help is appreciated!

I know it would suck somewhat but surely unlimited time internet with the occaisonal lag from torrenting is better than only an hour?
