Hello... I was just wondering about the performance-difference between the coppermine and the celeron-II cpu's...

Is it really worth paying double for a P3-933MHz compared to a Celly 1100MHz - that easily goes up to 1,25 GHz?

Please write back with benchmarks/links/personal experience...

best regards Christian

Well, lets see....

The general "rule of thumb" that's acknowledged here, is that there's about a 200MHz "difference" between the two cpu lines.

For example, a Celeron is roughly equivalent to a P/// running 200MHz slower (ie; Celeron 1100 = P/// 900) This line has been "blurred" somewhat, with the advent of the 100FSB Celerons, as part of the "difference" between the two, was the higher bus speed that the P/// runs at.

The P/// will always be the superior chip, due to it's advanced L2 cache. Larger, and more "associative", its the primary reason the P/// enjoys a performance "edge" over the Celerons.

My personal experience? I've got a C600 that runs up to 1053MHz. When I got my P/// 600E (see sig below), I noticed that my rig boots faster, and loads apps quicker with the P///, and the "difference" between the two is almost 100MHz exactly (1053 vs. 954). I personally don't see the Celeron being equal, if I throttled the P/// back to 850MHz. I think the P/// would still boot and load faster.

Hey, a Celeron 1100 is still a plenty fast chip, go with it if price is an issue. If price is no object, I'd opt for the P///....;)

I think you should wait a little longer before buying, as the new Tualatin core is beginning to show up.

The Tualatin Celeron will have 256Kb L2 cache (tho I don't know how associative it will be), as well as a smaller manufacture process (.13).

It seems that the Celeron 1200 is tualatin, so it should pay of to try this one.

Can't add much to what Mr. B and Dr. said. However, I know it's a minor point, but the FC-PGA socket 370 P-III CPUs and the FC-PGA socket 370 Celerons are both coppermines.

If your chipset sopports it, or you're getting a new mobo, get the celeron tualatin core. Runs 1600Mhz I hear and it beats the fastest duron. Gotta love that .13 micron and the heat spreader.
