I have a celeron 533mhz, 64 mb of ram, machine that i built out of spare parts. the rig will be doing nothing but folding. My ques is: what do i change in win 98, or the folding @ home program to get the fastest preformace out of folding.
oh yes, I will probally overclock it to about 600 mhz:D

End all the services that aren't needed with msconfig you don't end services with msconfig. Those are startup entries.
Anyway, you might want to get win2k, it is less bloated. But Steve was in the right mindset, you want to get rid of almost everything, so that it can fold unabated. You might want to set it so that it can get the best WUs, like tinkers, that it can handle. Make sure you set it to timeless so that you can get the most poinst without timelimits

your saying that windows 2000 is less bloated that win 98SE? Either way, I cant put 2000 on this rig. For "obvious" reasons ;)
also: eventually, I'll add some more ram, i will have go out and buy some, i just had 2 32 sticks laying around

If you want to stick with 98 on it, use 98lite: www.98lite.net
It allows you to remove IE; I use it on a couple computers and they very seldom crash now.

I dunno I went into it and ended a service before I think. Oh well you can still change the startup registry with it.

The version of MSCONFIG in WINXP allows you to do this. However, older versions of windows didn't have that ability. You had to go into the registry and manually edit the services, or hope that someone would take the time to make a registry service editer to do a lot of the hard work for ya, which is what 98lite does.

Anyways, that 98lite is pretty cool, however if you want small you can do windows 95. I have 95 running on a 224MB flash drive in my fujitsu and it has rather full blown functionaility (support for networking, IE, standard stuff)
I think the total drive usage is 185MB or around there

for super small... go with DSL (Damn Small Linux). Just gotta install WINE and F@H and voila... yer ready (a full install of DSL is i believe a little over 50Mbs)
